European Emission Laws making it hard for oz 4wd purchases.

Hi

The overseas markets for the main players in 4wd manufacturing, is making it more difficult for the oz buyers in regards to emisson control laws!!. Who wan"ts hi reving computer controlled buz boxes, that need trading in every 100.000ks.?
I know polution is a world wide problem, and its got to be adressed, But i"m not sure electronically controlled systems on a diesel engine so far has been a complete sucess!. If the system falters the air gets polluted ten times worse than with out it. The poms and there old design engines( eg leyland bus in the city what a shocker) But! being in earth moving have seen a cat 12 grader 25yrs old fire up initial puff of smoke on start up & then you will see nothing come out of that thing all day!. Design of injector pumps plays a major role in what comes out that exhaust pipe, i think. Tdi 300 landrover engine 15yr old design ,puff of smoke on start up, then clear as all day long, " Stuff electronics i say"

The facts, facts are technology is moving forward not back, we don't all want to drive dinosaurs, fuel prices are only going to go up and I will squeeze more kilometres per litre outer my so called "buz" box than can be got out of some engine that has barley changed in twenty years. Face it electronics are here to stay like it or not.
(Yeh you got me, that last piece of bait seemed lie abetter offer)LOL..

So a 6cyl toyo motor or nissan engine with no electronics is classed as a dinosaur design, even though i was looking at a new nissan trayback to-day! 4.2 td.

My main point is a 6cyl slow reving diesel at the present stage will beat a electronic contolled 4cyl hi reving hi torque engine in all terms of durability!.

Fuel consumption!!! Landy does 10 L / 100km. 18yr old?.

My 'dino'(93 model) 80 series 4.2 averages less than 10L/100km and will easily outlast my wife's NEW Kia Rio. I know we will be spending money on it for repairs that will outway maintainence on the 'cruiser.

Of course a Landy will get something like those figures 4cylinders aluminium body
and no faster than 45 mph, and as for the nissan engine apart from the turbo its is the same engine that was in the first gq as I said dinosaur..

e.g., pajeros have gone from 1850kg (MK1 84-89), to 2050 kg (MKII 90 to 99) to 2200kg (MKIII 2000 - ). How much more does a cruiser or patrol weigh than it did 20 years ago? They had to do something about engines to keep the fuel economy down! Now, if we had modern engines in the lighter bodies, that would be fuel economy. Lets ditch the bigger bodies, airbags, extra sound deadening, CD players, ABS etc. Holdens used to weigh about a 1000kg, now commodores weigh over 1750kg.
Thats why an old Landy gets good economy. Put that old design of a motor in a new body and it wouldn't survive.

And let's not forget that an engine or indeed a whole car, that lasts 500,000 kms, takes far less energy and produces less greenhouse gas to produce than say a car that lasts only 150,000 kms, which you have make at least 3 of to get to 500,000kms.

It's not all as obvious as it seem is it?

Australia will probably not see for a long time .. so some
advanced engines can not even run here ... oops ... sorry forgot
were always about 10 years behind at least ... and now we get
all the left over products from the rest of the world ... because
we are so progressive and innovative and quick to adopt what
others are doing ... since 50 years ... like water recycling and
not dumping our sh.t in the ocean or not digging big holes and
throwing our rubbish in ...

the Diesel I was talking about is the US ... they have new legislation and will roll out the new Diesel from October (now) ... All new Diesel trucks in the US from 2007 will require this new fuel ... old engines can use it .. but the new engines need the new fuel ... Will be interesting to see what the conversion people will do and what compliance here in Australia will require them to do .. will take a while though I guess .. so no new 2007 GM trucks for a while ... only pre 2007 ..

In the US the 7.3 was dropped a long long time ago ..
the new one is a 6.0 not a 6.6 .. the 6.6 is the Duramax (GM)
F-250s are poorly built and they have still lots of problems
with the engine ... will be interesting to see what they bring here ..
The new Diesel has much less sulfur and the new emission laws
in the US require an additional microfilter concept, which requires
the new fuel. I guess one has to take it out here and needs computer
modifications ..
