Fuel Consumption

Roger Lowry

I Have a 2000 GU Patrol which is returning only twenty mpg or 14ltr/100klm.
It has a roof rack which I know hinders fuel consumption. However what is the average ltrs/ioo or mpg I should expect.

My 1995 petrol Patrol gets 15 litres per 100km on a good
day. That's with extractors and using Morey's fuel
additive.

The figures I quoted are highway figures at 110kph on the Newell highway out of Dubbo heading nth & back.

Assuming you have a petrol engine you are to be commended on achieving consumption figures this good! The Patrol engine is notoriously thirsty and I would expect you to achieve something more like the 15 or 16 mpg I used to see from the Ford Maverick.

If it is either of the diesels thenyou are probably on the money if you do most of your driving on bitumen.

I have a 3.0 Lt Turbo diesel GU and due to work need to keep detailed fuel/mileage records. It is only 5000Km new and so far is achieving an average of 10lt/100km fuel consumption. This is mainly bitumen city driving however it has done a return trip from Sydney to Batemans Bay and a little State Forest exploring in that time.

1999 4.2 NA Diesel, average fuel consumption 12litres/100km (50% town, 25% highway, 25% offroad), can drop to around 9 for pure highway and up to 16 for soft sand.

20 MPG for a vehicle tipping the scales at 2.5 tonnes unloaded is what you would pretty well expect. As soon as you crank that speedo needle over 80km/h your fuel consumption is going to increase. Exagerated figures of 31 MPG(9litres/100km) I would definitely like to see that. My business partners 2000 GU 4.2 turbo diesel averages exactly the same as what you are getting, with a roof rack.
His best figures on a trip are 13.8 L/100. on highway.

I have a 4.2 Turbodiesel Patrol, GU 1999 with 80000km, I had it since new.
Best I ever got was 10L/100Km, worst I ever got was 15L/100km (that was doing 140km/h with a roof rack) normal average is 12L/100km no matter what terrain.
I guess you are driving yours too hard or it has a problem.
I found that unlike petrols mine is the same off road (firetrails etc) in fact it had better fuel economy up at the cape (doing the old telegraph track etc) than the highway runs.

Get a diesel!!! I've got a 100 series std (poverty) with the ol' 4.2 diesel and (on a good day!!, 5th gear, flat road) get just UNDER 11 ltr per 100k
