K and N air filters

Hi all,
I am heading up to townsville from mackay on friday night. Checked my air filter, it looks dirty but not that bad. It is a paper generic version from 20,000kms ago and just wondering if i should buy a K and N filter to suit my model.

I have a 1HZ landcruiser ute, i would lke to know your opinions and experiences regarding the use of higher quality air filters and differences in performance.
eg, my dirty paper filter vs new K and N filter for my trip to townsville.

It would be good to use a pod filter but thats illegal, hehehe.

I use a K&N air filter. They are good but if you read the instructions they are not suitable for off bitumen use. In theory you get improved air intake with the K&N filter and save money by not having to replace the filter.

I have not worked out the costs and suspect that there would not be much difference if you were purchasing the cleaner and recharge oil at RRP. I am lucky as I have a source where I purchased the K&N filter, cleaner and recharge oil at a very cheap price.

I carry a paper filter which I use when travelling off the bitumen.

Thats a good idea, carrying a paper filter for off road use.

HAHAHHA, Officer did ask me once to have a look under the hood as he couldn't believe the car and van could do 130. Turns out they can and he was happy all OK in the engine bay just a sore hip pocket for me AGAIN!!.

Stick to the standard Toyota washable paper filter, much better for your engine, oiled foam filters let too much fine dust through.

I agree. I ran oiled foam filters on my rally car and found them to perform worse than paper when off road. They let quite a bit of dust thru.

Your K & N will turn to mud off road and give you grief.

Trust me on this one as I have a K & N on the JEEP which is really a bitumen 'girl' cause I am too scared to take it off road in case of a electronics malfunction.

K & N works a treat on Bitumen.

On my 1HZ Troopy on the other hand I only use the OEM paper filter and all is well.

Member BONZ had a K & N filter on that 'thing' he drives whilst working on the 05 Outback Challenge, and it turned into a useless 'mud pack' in a very short amount of time.

I use them and have done for the last 60,000K’;s in my current car, The Explorer OEM filters are $68 a shot and I would have had to replace it 4 times by now, the K&N coast me $130+$20 for the Cleaning Kit that isn’t even half used yet.

They work and filter fine, If off road I simply Check it more frequently and if need be give it a tap out and apply some more oil to keep it fresh.

I have never had a trace of dirt or dust in my intake tubing, As for turning to Mud, well I don’t know what Dust tornado you guy’s go driving throe when out bush, maybe I just don go as hard corer as others> “Enter Photo of my Mud, Bug and Dust covered car after the Mid year Gascoyne trip if I had it on file” LOL
