Ok guys - heres a good one still to be tried so if you have some good info let us all know.

Was camped just outside Emerald a week back and ran into a couple of blokes and during the convo the subject of sandfly bites arose... GAVISCON (yeh the stuff ya swallow for a crook gutz) is supposed to be the go - just rub it on and instant relieve - believe it or not...Does anyone know about this fix?

Grrr!!!

Interesting. We always carry Gaviscon (and unfortunately use it a bit). Don't know why it never occured to me to rub it on my legs instead of swallowing it. It's obvious isn't it???

Hi Crazy Dog, I have found, after taking four kids camping many times over the years, that sandfly bites and hives, react well to ICE liniment gel applied liberally on first itch. If they are scratched before remedy is applied, and the skin is broken then apply any sort of plastic gel (quite large tube can be found in Chemist shop as face mask/mud pack for women, much cheaper than spray on variety, Avon may still have one) which dries like skin, keeps the air off the bite when the itch starts as it does at certain times of the day. Put it on bites after bath, before bed and no scratching during sleep. My theory is that heat is generated under the skin by anything strenuous and this causes the bite site to itch. Keep it cool and it won't itch. I have tried this many times on kids and myself. I never leave home without it, even though no kids along.

An aspro works well, just drop water on it and rub on skin.
The active ingredient is salicylic acid which is used in several topical creams used for calming angry skin.

Possibly irrelivant but,
I have an old friend, about 70 now, who was a shearer in his hey day. They found that rubbing sheep dip on their skin kept the flys off, well why not it keeps the fly's off sheep, when he was about 50 his skin started to fall off.........not kidding guys, this bloke almost fell apart before my eyes, shin grafts continuously and looked like crap.

I know its slightly different but I would be careful what I rub on my skin.
