Hi all quick question, what is the best type of those portable jump starting batterys with the cigi outlet etc. My dual system just bleep itself again and dont have time to stuff around with it. I also want one that will recharge on the go from the cigi lighter and will also need to run the waeco 50L off it as well. Any help appreciated. I hate it when some thing bleep s itself at the last minute. Regards Steve M

It will cost you about $300.00 for the ducks nuts 36AH rolls royce system WAECO RAPS

I still have the 24AH outback portable that I set up in my pathfinder because I could not fit a battery under the bonnett. These AGM batteries are very robust and will charge up via a cig lighter readily but you need to change the in car cable to 6mm sq.

I have not had experience with the cheaper versions (around $90.00 at Kmart and SuperCheap etc) but I reckom you get what you pay for.

My dual system in the Patrol was around $800 fitted.

(PS I hope the link works. I can't test it until I have posted this reply. You can Google RAPS WAECO Battery to bring up plenty of info)

Hi Steve

I saw some in Jaycar yesterday, but didn't ask any details. A good battery shop should have them or auto spark will have the info ya need. Globe batteries at Padstow have a range.

cheers

Stephen

Check out the projecta 1200amp unit, a Narva product.

$179 retail and $88 + gst trade from big agents in Victoria at least.

24ah 1/2 reasonable agm battery

Me - I just use a $45 ($40 trade) Jaycar 18ah SLA to Jump start , and run things.

If short on capacity just buy 2

Steve, you have asked for "the best type of those portable jump STARTING battery's with the cigi outlet etc" and then you mention "it will also need to run the Waeco 50L off it as well" ......

You just simply can't compare a "portable jump start" battery to a "100 a/h Deep Cycle AGM" battery.

Sure, one is 'cost effective', the other is just simply 'effective'.... :-)

My question would be, why did your original Dual battery systems "fail" as you say again ???
Will the reason your previous Dual battery systems fail have any effect on the 'next' system you fit ??
Was it an Alternator or regulator (charging) problem ???
Was the battery 'isolator' working correctly ???

Why not ascertain why your previous battery systems 'bleeped' and fix that problem, then use a quality AGM of 100+ a/h, that would be my choice.

I have a deep cycle battery in the rear tray now and is only new as is my main starting battery (brand new) I think it is some thing to do with the (wont mention the brand) system controller under the bonnet, not sure if its getting hot or some thing not quit sure. Had a sparkie look at it this morning and he said alternator and regulator are fine, the system is quit old so think it is time for a replacement, has copped a lot of water mud dust dirt etc over the years so will replace when I get back, but dont have time now to be running new wiring etc so thought I would buy one of those jump start batterys ( good quality) with deep cycle battery to do the job. Will be handy to have for the ski boat anyway, but thought if I'm going to get one then I want a good qaulity one. I know there are cheapies from supercheap etc but dont know how good they are. Gday Stephen,

If the AGM in the back is OK and the wireing etc is OK but the controller is stuffed, a heavy duty simple solenoid may be a cheap quick fix. An even quicker fix would be to hard wire the aux battery bypassing the stuffed system and disconecting (and insulating from bodywork etc) when you get to your destination.

My third battery ended up being a battery box from Whitworths with a ciggie plug and external terminals, for $49.00. I made up a lead for charging from the plugs in the back of the car, and can be easily fitted to the boat as a second battery with 2 wingnuts. You could use your existing AGM (if it fits) and you will have the best of both worlds - will start your Ski boat if needed, and will power the fridge for 3 times longer than a portable pack.

Cheers andrew

""I think it is some thing to do with the (wont mention the brand) system controller under the bonnet, not sure if its getting hot or some thing not quit sure""

Looks like your system is fine EXCEPT for the battery isolator.....

So if you tell what type it is you can then be advised as what to do about it.

I cant see any of the "Jump Starter" battery packs that can be charged by cigi lighter , being much good to run a fridge off.

My Battery Pack charges off the cigi plug fine , starts the vehicle when needed, but doesn't even get close to running my fridge satisfactorily.

Those big Waeco power packs dont charge off cigi plugs do they ?

Yep,

The 24 and 36 packs certainly do charge off a cig lighter socket. WAECO recommends their HD cable wired directly to their switch. It is dead easy to set up and I used the 24AH "Outback" RAPS for two years (on and off) to run my CF50 fridge and camp lights etc. While driving it charges just like a dual battery set up.

I suppose a quick work around for the original enquiry would be to set up the safety switch on the WAECO so that it cuts out from the main battery at a high current, allowing at least one start AND carry one of those Cheaper jumpstart packs for emergency use onl. I agree that the jump packs would not be worth thinking about to run a fridge for more than an hour or two. Yyou would have to check out the capacity. My CF 50 uses about 2 amps/Hour when on a cold setting in warm weather, so my 24AH battery would theoretically last only 12 hours. But of course you set the thermostat to a warmer setting and even switch it off at night. I am sure that the cheap jump starters are only sealed lead acids like motor bike batteries.

Where is Derek from ABR when we need him?

Hi Kingsley

As per my post above , in the main units like Projecta , Supercheap, they use AGM batteries and are sold as spare parts in Supercheap

Stephen,

I will answer your specific questions and give my opinion on what you should look for, if you wish to do both jump starting and running your fridge of the portable battery pack.

Firstly, lets not confuse the terms "Waeco" and "Thumper".
The Thumper used to be distributed under the Waeco "umbrella" but the product is now completely removed from the "Waeco" distributorship.

If you want the BEST type of portable Jump Starting unit, the Thumper is in my personal experience, unmatched by any other product.

If you want a portable power source to run your fridge for anything more than overnight, then the Thumper will do this too.

So, IMHO the BEST solution to both your stated requirements is a 75+A/h High Cranking Thumper. This unit comes complete with an in-car charging kit, (either 10 amp, or a heavy duty 20 amp unit) cabling and a short patch lead terminated with anderson connectors at either end. You simply plug one end into the rear connector box and the other end into the Thumper and it will charge will you are driving and run your fridge at the same time if that is what you want. The "kit" also comes with a removable jump start cable assembly which plugs into a larger Anderson connector on the unit.

I have tried some different configurations, including a battery box with an AGM battery inside and a jump start unit which only had a 17A/h capacity (not much good for anything other than a light).

Now I have the confidence to go anywhere, at any time and know that with the auxiliary battery in the car and "backed up" by the 75+A/h Thumper, I have sufficient capacity for 5 days without needing to recharge, if necessary.

Two of my friends also have Thumper portable battery systems and haven't bothered with a separate dual battery system in the car.
In fact, that is what they have anyway, with the ability to charge "on the fly"

I tend to remove the fridge from the vehicle when I set up camp for anything other than an overnight stop and the flexibility of being able to remove both fridge and power source from the vehicle is great.

I have no commercial ties with "The Home of 12 Volt" who are the manufacturers and distributors of the "Thumper" range of products. Being based in South Australia, I have talked to the Guys from time to time and apart from that I am purely a satisfied customer with the very best portable power source with the capacity to jump start the vehicle if the primary battery goes flat for any reason.

Check the product range out for yourself.
Home of 12 Volt

The cost of the product equals what you would pay for a good quality, permanently installed dual battery system.

Sorry about the length of the reply Stephen, but you did ask for THE BEST solution to handle both your requirements.
Bill
