CREB Track Opens

From this morning's Cairns Post:

"The gates to the CREB track will be opened today. The track is the service access track for the old Ergon Energy powerline to Cooktown, which runs through part of the World Heritage Wet Tropics Area from the Daintree River through China Camp to Bloomfield.
Motorists are reminded that the CREB track is only suitable for 4WD vehicles and those with 4WD and vehicle recovery experience."

Better make the most of it if you are within range. It will only last until the first rain or summer storm.

Why did it open so late this year, has there been problems?
We 4wd this glorious trek twice in August last year, it is paradise, it is our favorite part of Australia, & then we cruised onto to have a real cold drink & home made pizza at the Lions Den & then cruised back to Wonga beach. We met Rod and Gail, young aboriginie folk who live on the trek, really nice, knowledgeable helpful people...........will be doing this trek again one day.

Probably just rain. We had our wettest October for a long time. It doesn't take much to close the track. Only just getting proper dry weather and northerlies now - yet it is raining a light mist outside now!

Interesting sideline to Creb reopening this weekend was that the powers that be mounted an operation the previous weekend which will result in the prosecution of 40 bikers and 4 wheel drivers for using the CREB when closed.
