GQ wobble

Right up until i read all the posts on patrol wheel wobble i had not noticed a problem. I must have jinxed the truck cause next time i drove it it wobbled worse than a mark 2 zephyr. I read back over the posts on the subject and tried rotating the wheels and this almost cured the problem.Popular opinion says that the tyre mobs either dont know or care enough to balance your wheels perfectly, so out of curiosity and the need to get a life i will accurately machine up a dummy wheel hub with the smallest possible ball bearings fitted unsealed and running on crc and see how close it is.I Supose this will only equate to a static balance of the old days, but who knows it might help.In any case i will record where the weights are before i shift them and i can always put them back.Used similar method to balance pump impellors in the past and they ran as smooth as silk. if not you tyres than it is possible that quite a few things could be causing it. First i would check you steering damper if this has not been replaced for a while it is probably due. check tie rod ends. drag link etc...hope this helps ....666toy

Steve,

I put up with this problem for a couple of years while I spent a small fortune and wasted a lot of time trying to get it fixed. I did all the fancy wheel balance things one guy suggested the offset on my wheels was wrong and that I should buy some new ones like those he just happened to have in the workshop.

On a trip home from Lake Eyre it was doing it again, so badly that I could hardly keep it on the road. In desperation I pulled into a garage in Nyngan. The guy there said he probably couldn't fix it, "I'm no suspension expert." he said "but I'll have a look anyway."

It turned out to be a bush on the panhard rod. This guy suggested Pedders or the Nissan dealer in Dubbo. The Nissan dealer did not have the part, couldn't do it till late next week and it would cost about $250. Pedders had the part for $50 and would fit it for free that day.

I gave Pedders the $50 perfect.

Check the bushes, if there is any doubt replace them.

A new Steering damper and new suspension bushes cured my GQ ute, it was doing it that bad that I had to pull over for fear of crashing if it started
