son in law just bought a very clean 1990 G X L petrol [carby engine] truck, only thing he did not test was centre diff seams ok useing low range but when you through the switch at say 70 ks motor seems to die and pulls to right [my 1992 GXL diesel book says you can engage centre diff at speed as long as all wheels are traveling at the same speed ie not locked up or spinning] and i do this often, any ideas . also rear diff has tag saying use limited slip diff oil did this model have limited diff as standard thanks safe driveing mal b

Are all the tyres the same brand/ wear/size/diameter, and were you engaging the centre diff on bitumen?

Mal,
The reason I asked is because it sounds like you've engaged the centre diff on bitumen, and you have tyres of unequal size. Your motor didn't "die"..... I think you had whats called "transmission windup" and something very expensive can go crunch with all that force through the diffs and transmission.

The other possibility is that a diff has been replaced with the wrong ratio.

Mal,

The 80 Series did have LSD on the GXL.

The 1990 Petrol (3F) motor was and still is very thirsty.

Being a constant 4WD and the vehicle does not have any problems when the centre diff is not locked, I would say to start looking at the centre diff. From there look at the front diff.

For the motor to die there would have to be a lot of resistance some where. If there is no noise there should be a build up of heat some where.

A good 4WD mechanic should be able to help.
