Pilbara trip

I think when we did the Hamersley rangers 3 year ago we went at the end of June and the water was cold but it didn’t stop us from swimming at every opportunity.

I think I would rather do it in June and face a little bit of cold water and have nice day time temps than go in the heat of summer just to get slightly warmer water for swimming and have to deal with 40 degree days.

If taking the coast road, be careful of the roadhouse at the junction of the coast and the road to Paraburdoo. The prices there can be a *tad on* the high side.
Great area that I would love to have seen more of.

Hammersley gorge was freezing cold end of July '06. I tried to have a swim but too cold, kids could not stand in the water it was that cold (5 through to 12, Mum wouldn't get in).

Previous years Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool have been ok.

You can't beat a splash in the cold water to freshen up though.

Even in the warmer months like November, December the water is cold.

There is plenty of advice given up there not to jump straight in. Apparently there have been a few deaths caused by the sudden temperature drop when hot people have jumped into the cold water!

Just go, and enjoy one of the best places in Australia.

We were there in May a few years ago, and the weather was hot. After walking up and down the gorges, a cool refreshing dip was just glorious. In the cool of the evening, Fern Pool has warm and cold patches of water. June should be an ideal time to visit the Pilbara.

Take a plastic bucket to the water hole. Fill the bucket and pour the water over yourself. Then go for a swim. This works most of the time...unless there is ice on the water...lol
