Lake Jasper & Black Point, WA

Submitted: Monday, Jan 01, 2007 at 15:59

Chris & Jody (Golden Bay)

Has any one been to Lake Jasper recently. We are looking at heading down there on Friday for 4 days and as we have never been there before i was hoping someone could tell me of the better spots to camp. We have an off road camper and are totally self sufficient when camping off road. Any help with good spots or GPS co-ordinates would be greatly appriciated. We find that word of mouth is always better than a book.
Thanks for any help.

Chris.

Hi Chris & Jody, did a day trip into Lake Jasper and Black Point in November. There is a mass of camping at Lake Jasper. Going into Black Point may be a tight squeeze and the track was fairly over-grown with overhanging scrub in places. Looks like an excellent fishing spot at Black Pt and there are pit dunnies as well.

At Lake Jasper there are fire rings provided by DEC (CALM) and there is heaps of shade.

BIG negative those bastard March (Marsh) flies are really bad. Stand still and a dozen of the hungry buggers land on you and start nibbling; leave the car windows open and 30 take up residency in the car.

Apart from that a fantastic looking spot. If you're towing then you may need high range other than that a good drive to both spots.

BTW one of the short cut tracks into Black Pt was closed due to localised flooding so be prepared to get the map book out and find an alternative route onto the main track in. Very picturesque spot of the world and you won't be disappointed.

There are a couple of spots to camp back from the beach at Black Pt, suspect that ticks may be a problem due to the number of roos in the area though.

Enjoy

No tracks closed at thwe moment, all is dry and well...

no march flies presently...

No problems with ticks at the camp sites, only if you stand still in the middle of the bush..

I asked similair question recently and got some great info from recent travellers. I posted my question on 27/ 12/06. No info about co-ordinates though as a bit technological for me... Perhaps there may be GPS info on trek notes on this site. Anyway, see you down there on weekend. White NM Pajero.

Just gave my copy of Weekend Trips South of Perth away so can't check but I'm sure both locations are in Nick's book.

Hi Chris & Jody

I was down there over the Xmas break - we stayed at camp #13 at Black Pt. It was not that busy, but we came home on the 27th, so it may have got busier over new year. We went in via the Lake Jasper Rd/Wapet track and out via the seasonal rd to Stewart Rd (definately the preferred route, mostly 2WD). Did a couple of trips to Lake Jasper for shower water and it was 50min each way, but the track was getting more and more chopped up. Not may people at the Lake - and LOTS of flies.

I getting into the camping area at Black pt should be do-able from the seasonal rd (the last 2 km after you cross the Wapet track is a little soft in spots), but definatley not recommended from the Lake Jasper Rd/Wapet track end (there are several very soft, steep, tight corners to negotiate). To lake Jasper should also be possible, but there were a couple of soft steep sections.

A word of warning - at the first groups of campsites you come to at Black Pt (where we camped) you may struggle to turn around a camper without unhitching. There are other areas where you can drive around a small loop rd.

Fishing on Jasper Beach was excellent - found one hole where every cast was a fish (whiting, herring, bream) and this was on squid.

Let me know if you need any further info.

Regards

Tim

Thanks to all for the updates. Mike, hope your right about the march flys at the present. They can always ruin a good trip. They seem to love the missus skin.

Cheers,

Chris
