OziExplorer / Magellan Explorist XL

Gidday all

I'm contemplating the purchase of OziExplorer and a Magellan Explorist XL. I will be using the XL in stand-alone mode during daily travel, but using OziExplorer to do trip planning and then upload/download waypoints and routes, as well as to store actual trip data.
I'm interested in other people's experiences with this type of setup.
I already have a copy of the NATMAP Raster 1:250,000 maps, and I'm looking at possibly some of the HEMA products as well.
Does anybody know if the HEMA maps be uploaded or copied onto the Magellan?

I use an older Meridian and find it invaluable, the XL would be even better with the larger screen. You'll probably find that the maps that are supplied with the GPS Discover Aus Topo will do a lot of what you need. Adding OziExplorer will allow the use of just about any digital map you can get your hands on, including Hema maps.

We have this combination and it works well, no complaints. The NATMAP and HEMA maps can be used with OziExplorer, but cannot be uploaded onto the Magellan XL. The basic XL comes with only a very basic base map installed, so you either need to buy DiscoverAus Streets and Tracks on CD or better deal is to buy the travel pack which includes the XL, DiscoverAus topo maps on a SD card, vehicle mount, and power lead/USB cable.

I have now had the XL for about 12 months using Discover Aus doing the same thing that you are asking about.

The XL is superb. Really happy with that purchase.

The interface between them works flawlessly. I now rely on the SD Card as a part of the GPS.

gday Lea, I am running the same set up and it works like a dream, get the package deal, the HEMA desert maps that you use on Oziexplorer don't work on the GPS but apparently you can get another HEMA version that will. The Discover Aus maps that come in the package are very good and have a heap of tracks that aren't on the Natmap maps. You can download converters to move files into Oziexplorer from their website

I have the same same setup and am happy with it. My only criticism of the XL is that the batteries do not recharge whilst the unit is plugged in - you have to remove them and charge externally or use throwaways. Not a big issue if you have it plugged in to power most of the time as the batteries are not used then but remember to keep a spare set if you plan to use it out of the vehicle, it runs down the batteries quickly due to the big colour screen I guess.

Would buy the same again so I think that says it all.
