Hi Everyone have a bit of a dilema here on what to do with the box in my 2000 4.2td patrol when i first bought the patrol the kind person ...haha ...i bought it off would always ask me to give him a call 20 mins b4 i got to his place to make sure he was home didnt think any thing of this , took the patrol for a spin liked it negotiated a price, bought the car , i'll just add that at the time i was living in Pt Lincoln and bought the car in Whyalla, anyway i drove the car home no probs , next morning i gets into car starts it up and ...WTF!!! is that noise anyway takes the car to mechanic and he says 5th gear is shot , common prob with that model , so i pays the money gets g/box recond mechanic shows me parts that are stuffed and tells me that it has been done once b4 and he thinks by nissan, well its been going great until about 2 mths ago i hear the same dreaded noise again, hoping its not same prob i try to ignore it ..lol....it gets noisier so today i decided to drain oil ..just as i figured its got heaps of metal filings and oil is a very metallicay color ...so if you were me would you buy an exchange box or consider getting this one fixed again, my way of thinking is maybe something not quite right in there ...bent shaft or something maybe???...what do you people reckon???....I was offered a box out of a 2001 GU td patrol ute today 70000ks havent worked out price yet do these boxes suffer the same probs ? and will it actually fit??.....cheers ......Dave

Shame to hear of your problems Dave. I would ring Nissan and try to find out when and if it was replaced by Nissan in the past. I think you would find if they did repair it it may have been with a replacement box anyway that had been repaired from another vehicle as it would be quicker to get you going again and they can fix the buggered one at their leisure until another one came in.

Hi,

It seems odd that you can chew out the 5th so fast. Also, it usually make no noise before it goes. There maybe another problem. As for the 2001 gearbox, it will fit but it could have the same problem. The modified shaft was apparently not in production until 2002.

The problem was with some patrols in 1999 and 2000. It was that there was a fault in manufacturing of the shaft and it was too short. One rectified it should not occur again. It is the first time I have heard of it reoccuring and I would suspect that it was not repaired correctly.

If you ring Nissan Customer Service with the VIN number they are able to tell you details as to whether the vehicle was repaired and if in fact it was a vehicle with the faulty shaft.

The 2001 ute gearbox should be okay. Get the VIN number from the vehicle and give Nissan a ring just to make sure.

I am of similar opinion to Col here, but my understanding is that the GQ box does not fit in a GU body without body blocks of mods to tunnel. The guts of a GQ box are supposed to be mainly interchangeable in a GU box so this may be worth looking into. I had a few GQ pieces thrown into my GU gearbox just a few months back (on the reccomendation of my chosen repairer). I would think if it was repaired properly 1st time round, you should have had no further probs. If your chosen repairer did not replace mainshaft on the rebuild you done, LOOK ELSEWHERE for another repairer as this should have been the first thing to be replaced if 5th gear was stripped off the mainshaft.

Good luck with it.

Hi Dave,
This was a problem with, as said, 1999/2000 gearboxes. Related to the spline on 5th gear and mainshaft (spline too short and it gets chopped out). Nissan fixed mine at about 115,000km and over 2 yrs on, it's been ok since.
If the job had been done properly, a replacement (upgraded) main shaft and 5th gear (plus a few minor bits) should have fixed it permanently, so a subsequent failure makes the earlier repairs sound sus.
Recall the bits were approx $1300 for mainshaft and a few hundred for the 5th gear, plus the small bits and labour. Most of the bearings were sealed, so should not have been affected by the crud in the oil.
The main difference with the patrol ute g/box would probably be ratios, but this would not be a big issue. I know that the ratios were different for each of the turbo 4.2, standard n/a 4.2 and petrol model wagons, so expect some difference for the ute. The 4.2 turbo was the highest gearing in 1st.
Otherwise, these gearboxes are pretty bullet-proof, so a 70k box should be just run in. If the price is right, that might be the best option. You might need to retain your speedo sensor gear if you change gearboxes.

According to Nissan when I had mine the box was fixed from Nov 2001 onwards.

The bought out a Nissan Fix kit for the problem which was retrofitted to all failures, or should have been. When the rebuilt mine the first time the dealer in perth put in the old spec parts and it had to be recalled to rebuild it again when they found out.

Did 150,00 after rebuild and all very nice.

Just got off phone to Nissan customer service in Victoria , they inform me that the problem exists right up to the 2003 model patrols ......so after all the headaches have spoken to 4wd systems at Gilles plains here in Adelaide and for around same price as i was going to pay for s/h they will rebuild my box, with a new shaft.....so have decided to go that way , also get a decent warranty .......thanks everyone for your comments .......Cheers ......Dave

Hi Dave,
I'd be having a good look at the failed mainshaft splines after it's pulled down to see why a supposed upgraded shaft has failed. Something doesn't add up!
Good luck,

Hi Dave,
My fathers GU 5th gear failed on his 2000 3.0 (approx 200000k) and he was lucky to have relatives, near where it failed,(ironically Port Lincoln!) who knew a good wrecker and was able to source a '04 g/box AND transfer for $3300.
donor vehicle was showing 36000k so he replaced it, lock stock and barrel.
as far as I know the change over went smooth(no mods)
