100 series 1hz engine rattle

Afternoon all,
Can anybody help me with a noise that is progressively getting worse. It sounds like a ball bearing in a soft drink can getting shaken real fast and only occurs from 2500 rpm to 2600 rpm mainly in second and third gear.It doesn't do it in neutral so its real hard to pin point. It seemed to start after I gave it a tank full of bio diesel.
Any ideas/solutions much appreciated.
Thanks Brad.

Hi,
After you used all that bio up did you change the filters and run normal diesel in it to see if the noise is still there. Sounds to me like a bit of crap stuck in one of the injectors that the bio loosened up. Maybe a bottle of injector cleaner will sort it out?

Thanks Tour Boy,
Just had an 80'000 k service so presumed they changed the fuel filter.I'll try some moreys or chemtech cleaner and stay the hell away from bio. Ever had any results from injector cleaner yourself ?

Brad.

Was the service b4 or after the noise started. If b4 you may need to do the filters again (try the inj. cleaner first)
I've had good results with injector cleaner in both petrols and diesels. But now I add 500ml of unleaded to 90lt of diesel every couple of months just to keep everything clean. Last set of injectors lasted 270,000km and still not smokey but naturally a bit worn in the tips.

Service was after the noise started.Had a long range tank fitted at the same time as the service and the mechanic asked me if I'd been running it on cooking oil because what was left in the old tank was thick as. Definitely be trying the cleaner.
Thanks

Mate do the injectors as a last resort as the later 1hz injectors are around $700 whereas the early 1hz are $350. Brother in law had similar symptoms (noise and power loss) in his hilux after going the bio (now he knows why it was cheap) but a new tank of diesel and a good flogging and it came good by itself.

i know the noise your talkin about, my 99 cruiser does it and so does my mates 02 model 100 series, i went to a mechanic and questioned him and he reckons its a common thing form the 1hz, its the valves and they need adjusting. ive put all about thison the forum before about 3-4 days ago.

good luck

Does anyone know for a fact if many Toyota dealers actually have shims to adjust the valves? All I ever get from them is that they are within tolerances, but a mate in the diesel business reckons he ends up doing them for the local dealer.

G'day Gold Member,
I've had a look through the forum but could only find your post about the transfer case oil. Part of the 80 000 k log book service is a valve clearance check. After a certain 4wd service centre in Wangara had my truck for ten days my wife had to pick it up as I had flown back to work.It was then that they came up with some bull bleep story about why they couldn't do the valve clearances.I will be taking it back as soon as I get home.As I am in W.A. as well, just wondering if you could let me know the name of your mechanic in the hope of finding some one reliable.
Thanks Brad.

Andrew,
If you order the shims, they usually have to get them from interstate!! I think its also common to machine shims down until the clearance is correct, rather than replace.

"Within tolerances" usually means they have had a listen to the motor and it "sounds OK".

Haha why am I not surprised. At least here locally (Heidelberg VIC) the Toyota dealer has them in stock. They are not cheap so I am surprised why they wouldn't charge for them and use as many as possible! Casper

Definitely sounds like a valve problem have it checked pronto.
I doubt it is the fault of biodiesel just unlucky for you . Biodiesel does loosen up a lot of crud in your tank but thats a good thing once it is clean you wont have any fuel problems.

Give the guys at Robson Bros in Bentley or TLC in O'Connor a call. They have a good reputation for working on 4WD here in Perth. TLC only do Toyotas and are very knowledgeble.

Personnally I don't think that the problem it is because of the Bio other than it cleaning out your fuel lines.

Brad,

No problems - being mechanically and technically challenged I am used to breaking things and then having to take it to an expert to fix :-) so I tend to get to know who the good ones are :-)

Whilst I haven't used Robsons I know a number of people who have and they speak highly of them. I tend to use TLC as I have an 80 Series 1HZ with an after market turbo and they do a good job and take time to slap me around and tell me where I went wrong - also they are closer to Rockingham, where I live.

Hope you get the problem sorted out. One piece of advice - look at fitting a Lucas CAV filter adaptor. Costs about $140 but the cartridges only cost $5 - $8 dollars and you can see when they need changing - esp using Bio. I change mine every 10000 kms.
