I got one not long ago (Mth or 2) for under $300! Genuine Nissan! I actually have my old one here as a spare, could work something out with you if your interested. its 100% good... Long story but replaced it anyway. (chasing overheating problem, but wasnt water pump!)

I agree with the stick with Genuine.. The original one lasted since 1991, so the next one should last 12 yrs or so... Good value I think.

im not realy sure about nissan water pumps but i know from experiece fitting ball joints tie rod ends and most other car parts even brake pads. got 70000ks from a set of original festiva brake pads thought that was ok so i bought ford genuine part because i know bendix probly wont last that long and geez look what happens 40000 later time for new ones.if you have a part that lasts 100000-20000 from new and have to buy new genuine why would they sell you the same thing thats why its called spare parts and are able to charge you big $$$$$.i sell tyres as well and you cant tell me they cant make a tyre to last 100000ks of course they can but why dont they no good for the company is it.there atre several types of after market water pumps some good some crud.chineese ones not much chop. jap ones good pretty sure they are gmb ones we use .from the amout of ks you do find another mechanic one who will use non genuine bitslooking foward to easter at jamieson

I replaced the water pump on my GQ at 300000km with a non genuine item made in Japan. Unfortunately cannot say how long it will last as it has only done 15000km. From memory it was under $200. Do it yourself, its not a difficult job.

Like truckster says the first one lasted 12 years so stick with that. The only thing to question is the price quoted so it may pay to try another Nissan dealer or a reputable workshop but using the genuine part.

Once had a bloke blow up a turbo diesel engine by overheating it. Turned out to be an "identical made in the same factory" or so they all say, part, only problem was that the impeller was substantially smaller and wasn't pumping the water.

You gotta whatch out on things like brakes too. Not much point fitting pads that last for ever if they are so damn hard that they chew out the rotors quickly. I would rather replace pads any day.

OEM Water Pump: $ 100ish + gst
Hoses: $ 27.98 lower 32.42 + gst
Clutch Fan: $ 296 + gst

All up inc GST:-> $500.59

Water pumps on GQ's are a known problem area. I tend to agree with your mechanic that the genuine one is the more reliable pump and after all what are you saving on a cheap pump, $100? You could do the job yourself, however, if not that way inclined then I believe it was a fair and honest quote. If you consider $50 for coolant, $60 for hoses, $150 for a couple of hours work with a guantee, that leaves 390 bucks for the Nissan pump, which is about the correct retail price, I would think?
