What we did was weld up a platform frame of 1/2 inch square light metal tubes to fit in the space behind the rear seats (after removing 3rd. row of seats). High enough to fit 10litre water container underneath (or those new material shopping bags). Put 7 or 5 ply marine on top (bolted on). Secure system by attaching marine turnbuckles from underside of frame to 3rd. row seat bolts (may need couple of links of chain on each bolt to hook turnbuckles to). All heavy bouncy gear fits underneath. Loosely cover with picnic rug black side up. When 4WD or camping can fit up to 3 rows high (we normally use only one row with camping chairs on top) and up to 3 rows wide of the 6 inch high long underbed plastic containers with clip on lids (approx $15 each) will fit on top of the "platform". Secure containers (and chairs ) to the platform (ply) with two long ratchet tightened straps crossways under the platform and over the lot.
Failing that a large picnic rug, black side up, tucked into the 3 headrests of the middle row of seats make a reasonable loose cover. the black looks smarter from outside the vehicle & makes it hard to see the shape of things underneath.
If you're not living on the edge you're taking up too much space
