Sorry, i did say there was no shop.....there could have been
a shop but i dont remember it, maybe they didnt sell icecreams,
i was just a little kid !
i do remember the sand mining though, the big pipe that
used to spew black sand all over the beach!
i think the only barge over to Fraser was owned
by the Elmer family!

Yeah, I too remember Double Island when there was three crossings from north to south (east to west if you want to call it that???) none of which had boards to help you through. The third crossing (closest to lighthouse) was a massive up then a huge down and up before the drop onto the beach out the other side. So many diesels just couldn't get the momentum to get down and up the middle part......they used to really get the beeps when our old beach buggy zoomed past with a little toot from the tinny b/buggy horn. Good memories. (The memories of pushing that old heap a $hit when it got bogged are not so fond LOL!!!)

Was up there at Rainbow beach on our way back from Fraser on Sunday. It's still a beautiful beach despite your memories, but we had to leg it as we were 1hr from high tide and we only just made the Leisha Track onto Teewah Beach :o) Had to pull a Patrol ute (I think) off the beach as they were stuck good'n'proper and had 35psi in their tyres. Dropped em to 20 and pulled them out - good deed done LOL.

In 1981 on my honey moon I went up teewah beach through double island point (there was a camping area at the point then) to frazer island for the first time, the done thing seemed to be for campers to bury their rubbish in the dunes. When ever there was sand erosion the litter on the beach was amazing. How things have changed, first the rangers left little trailers for rubbish that they used to take to the dump themselves , now industrial bins even are just enough. I read a post where they cleaned up frazer on the weekend how great is that! I am not worthy as I feel as though I was one of the litters of 1981 and feel ashamed for doing what was the done thing then. A couple of years back while staying at Indian head the track had eroded the side bank a bit and we noticed some rubbish sticking out of the bank and while a square milk bottle took my eye on further digging we found it was like a time capsule from the 1960s. I miss the old times in these places but I am pleased people try to look after these treasures as far as litter is concerned

we buried EVERYTHING!
off up the track with shovel and toilet paper LOL
as teenagers we used to go up to double island around the time
they put in the toilet block just down from chapmans shack.
we used to head up to rainbow shops in the arvo and come back to
camp in the dark, tide permiting. the site from rainbow looking around the
beach to our camp. i remember it looking like a city around there
with all the camp lights on!
good times were had lol
wild dogs were a bit of a problem back then too, they used to break
into our gazebo at night and take all the food ! i have photos of them.
