BIG BIG birthday in May and looking at staying a few nights at Curtin Springs Station. Has anyone stayed unpowered (we all have caravans) and could give us some first hand feedback please.
Thanks
Bob & Lorraine

Hi Bob & Lorraine, cant give you first hand, sorry, but research for an April trip
shows that Curtin Springs has free unpowered sites, A small ? charge for showers.
I have read a couple of reviews that said it was fairly basic, but clean, can provide
meals & very good tours to adjacent Mt. Connor. We shall certainly be having a look as it offers an alternative to the excesses of Yulara. Hope this helps. I expect
someone who was there last week will advise you immediately if not sooner. :0)

Is Curtin Springs Station the same as Curtin Springs Roadhouse?? (No map handy)

I know I slept in the cab for free in the campground of the Roadhouse late '05

Yep good alternative to Yulara, you wouldn't use the difference in fuel commuting to the roack and olgas either. Pretty basic as they don't waste water on grass like they do at Yulara either.

Its a working cattle station that has campers for low cost. Its a few years since we were there but so much more human and friendly than Yulara. You can get meals in the same dining room as the staff (for a reasonable cost) and get a real feel for life there. I think they do station tours - perhaps to Mt Connor - as well.

We got there late and stayed in their cabins - basic but clean and sheltered. I know their camping is free.

I reckon its way better than the rip off at Yulara.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think we will spend a few days there and move on to Yulara for just 2 nights. Wife wants to do the Sounds of Silence Dinner on her birthday and that's too far from Curtin. Would still like to hear from anyone that has stayed in the unpowered campground and maybe done the full day tour

We stayed at Curtin Springs without power on 3 June. Just missed out on the last powered site. We were glad though as the generator would have driven us mad. Unpowered sites are free. There is a large fire pit which could be good fun with a crowd. Facilities were very clean. Small charge for showers. We ate outside under cover at communal tables. Choice of food is basically beef or camel steak or burgers (burgers are ginormous). Good to meet other travellers. Some were staying in the cabins and were happy with them.

It was very cold (i.e. around 0 C degrees).

In my opinion a good stopover in order to reach Ulara early but I would not waste my precious time and fuel running running the 84km each way back and forth each day to save a few dollars.

Enjoy the BIG birthday.
