Jonny,
Congratulations on purchasing what I believe is a great (underated) 4WD. I have just taken delivery of our second new GLS dual cab (traded in our 99 model) and can offer the following from our experiences.
The thrust bearing on EVERY 5 speed Triton that I know of is noisy. I queried this at first service on the first vehicle to be told that the sound was normal. I continued to query it at each subsequent service and the standard answer didn't change. When we traded it the noise was still there BUT we didn't ever have any trouble with it.
AND the new car has exactly the same noise.
You'll be happy to know that we didn't have any mechanical breakdowns in the entire time that we had the truck.
Let me know if you get a Mitsubishi dealer to do anything about the noise - or explain what they believe it is.
BTW, where did you buy it, how many k's and how much did they sting you?

Jonny,
Glad to be a help.
A question, or two for you, if I may?
Cruise control - Is it genuine Mitsubishi or after market? How well does it work? Is it steering wheel or column mounted and who is the manufacturer.
I am in the process of trying to source on for our truck.
Thanks,
Wombat
