triton lemon or buy of the year

just bought a second hand 99 model 3l 4wd triton. the thrust bearing seems to make heaps of noise so loud i can hear it standing next to the drivers seat (outside) when theres no other noise around. spoke to heaps of mitsubishi service centres 50% would of said no thats not right 50% would of said no worries thats the norm. also its just developed a knocking noise somewhere in the back when under way i carnt pick a trend sometimes when slowing sometimes when speeding up no a regular timed one either. other than that great rig i just wanna get these problems ironed out before taking it anywhere.
any input would be great.

the knocking noise could be a rear uni, happened to me that way once with an old ute i had (holden).

I would say thrust bearing noise is not normal, especially if it goes away when you depress clutch.

I was always of the opinion that if the bearing noise went away when the clutch pedal was depressed that the problem was the front bearing on the input shaft of the gearbox.

Jonny, if the noise stops as soon as you apply slight pressure on the clutch it could be the return springs on the clutch fork. No sure if your one has one but I had a vehicle that had a thrust bearing that rattled with the foot off the clutch. It was a broken return spring. If the bearing noise stops when you have fully depressed the clutch and the input shaft has stoped spinning then it will be the bearings on the imput shaft.Nearly as good as sex

I'm with sloth, I always thought that a noise that goes away when you step on the clutch is most likely to be the thrust bearing. I think it's because they tend to go dry, and get a bit loose and rattly, but when you step on the clutch you load them up and so the noise reduces or goes away completely. But I could be wrong...

Anyway I don't think it should necessarily be accepted as 'normal'. Sounds like time to slip the gear box out and check the thrust bearing and if that is OK look at the input shaft brgs. Nearly as good as sex

Could the knocking be the exhast ?
I dont know what the triton 31 is but if its a ute it could be the ute body to chassis bolts come loose and jumping on the mounts (this happened to my old Hilux).

Congratulations on the new beast, sounds like you need to check the oil in the gear box. If there is any sign of water in the oil the ute has been driven in water and you should change the oil in everything and rerace the box. The gear box bearings should last if they are in clean oil. The knock could be uni's, shackle bushes, spare tyre, loose wheel nuts, good luck. Eric.

had a mazda bravo with a noisey thrust bearing.my 4wd mechanic told me it was probably just a little dry and suggested i spray inox on the bearing through the inspection hole.worked a treat! noise went away drove another 20000 km's and sold it and know one knew the difference.keep in mind you must use the little nozzle extensions and be accurate.you don't want any on the clutch plate.also don't use to much because you don't want it spraying of everywhere.
noise in the back end sounds like a uni joint on it's way out.

Congratulations on purchasing what I believe is a great (underated) 4WD. I have just taken delivery of our second new GLS dual cab (traded in our 99 model) and can offer the following from our experiences.

The thrust bearing on EVERY 5 speed Triton that I know of is noisy. I queried this at first service on the first vehicle to be told that the sound was normal. I continued to query it at each subsequent service and the standard answer didn't change. When we traded it the noise was still there BUT we didn't ever have any trouble with it.

AND the new car has exactly the same noise.

You'll be happy to know that we didn't have any mechanical breakdowns in the entire time that we had the truck.

Let me know if you get a Mitsubishi dealer to do anything about the noise - or explain what they believe it is.

BTW, where did you buy it, how many k's and how much did they sting you?

bought it from a non mitsu dealer at homebush sydney it was 35000 with 66000 on it. it only has a few extras like cd roof racks and cruise control. bit pricey but its what we wanted and we looked all through sydney that weekend and couldnt find any better.
once again thanks for your input now i can sleep again.

i was told it was after market its mounted on the steering colum under the wipers it works great nice and simple an on/off switch and a set speed theres no resume or anything like that it cancels the speed once the brakes are applied and not with the accelerator. not sure which brand though there was no paper work on it and no brand name on it.
