Engle fridges

Hi Gang,
your favorate P in the A again.
I have an Engle fridge that will not run on 12Volt but does on 240V.
Do any of you chappies out there know (in Western Australia) where Engles can be repaired and any approximate costs involved.

Sounds like the inverter is stuffed. Engel repairs will be expensive. Cheapest option might be to buy a 12vDC/240vAC inverter of correct rating and use your engel on 240v. Bonus is you will also have 240v when out in the sticks.

Engel repairs are so expensive it will probably be cheaper to buy a new fridge. In our tour buses we tried Engel and were the most failure prone fridge we ever used. What is more Engel would always find an excuse not to cover the repairs under warranty.

I took my Waeco to them about 4 weeks into the warranty period. The brand new replacement I received for that fridge looks like it too will soon be paying them a visit.

This same problem happened to my Engel 2 years ago and it cost nearly $600 to fix. 3 months later the exact same thing happened and they would not fix the repair under warranty. I dumped the Engel as it has been an expensive lesson as that was not the first time it had to be repaired. My friend who travels with us at times had his Engel fail last year and needed a new compressor and they wanted a $1000 to fix it. He bought a new fridge like mine.

Hi Raybates,

We also had an Engel that failed on 12V. It was found to be a fracture in one of the wires in the 12V lead near to the fridge end plug. Some roadside repairs fixed it. I have heard of this problem before. Have you checked the lead?

similar problem I had, it was the oscillator CCA that had given up the ghost, $120 for new CCA. CCA was supplied by Lions. Lions are good to deal with.
Also as suggested, check that you don't have any airgaps in the 12v wiring, or a high resistence joint somewhere ina connection.

Hi rebates,
I had exactly the same problem and checked everything with a multimeter,and all was working well. I visited an autorized engel repair, and he checked the same things as I did, with the same results. Then he plugged the fridge lead into a box he had to check the wiring underload. Hey presto, found the problem. All it was was the fuse. It was fine with no power draw, and visually the fuse looking intact, but underload it was no good. hope this helps.
