Jackaroo Tyres

G'day

I have a 2001 TD Widetrack Jackaroo with the standard 245/70/16 Wrangler tyres still fitted. Has anyone had any experience fitting larger/wider tyres to the widetrack models? If so, what size and did you encounter any problems such as rubbing of steering components etc? I am considering BFG AT's or Cooper ST's in the 265/75/16 size or there abouts. I had 245/70/16 BFG's fitted to my previous Jack which were an excellent tyre but tended to dig themselves into sand a little when not deflated. Now that I am in WA, sand performance is a little more important than before. Any info would be appreciated.

I know this wont answer your question but legally you cant go over 15mm wider then the 245. I have the 2001 jack and when I got new tyres fitted they would fit the 265/75 on but did not recommend it so I went for the 245/70.

After some more research I think I have decided on the Cooper ST 255/70/16. Just waiting to here from the insurance company tomorrow (a tip I got from some others on the BB). From my calculations these will be within the law and manufacturers requirements.

255/70R16 won't give you any significant problems. The overall diameter is exactly 15mm larger than the largest tyre certified for Jackaroo. So you are within ADR guidelines and remain legal.

In theory they will put out your speedo out by 2%, which shouldn't be a big deal. Performance wise, any impact should be negligible.

Widetrack Troopers in the US are known to be able to take 275/70R16 tyres without any rubbing or other problems. However that practice is illegal here without getting an engineer's certificate.

To gain max lift from my vehicle, I put 275/80 BFG's on my Jacka. Experiencing a little bit of rub on components, but the clearance and the fact that silly transfer case don't rub anymore outweighs the benefits.
