Murder Capital of the world???

Submitted: Tuesday, May 01, 2007 at 12:49

Hairy

Gday,
I just heard on the radio that Today Tonight or some show like that in Adelaide did a story on Alice Springs saying it was the murder capital of the world.
Did anyone see it?
What was said?
Cheers

You're kidding! Any idea why? I would have thought Townsville would be well off the track for the desert people.

As a West Aussie I always look for a little bit of home when on the road. You can't get a decent choc milk anywhere in Australia apart from WA (and I know I'm risking death here but Farmers Union choc milk is rubbish). Mrs Mac's pies are far superior to all the others too.

Most of the locals haven't even heard of it.

I used to buy them out every time I went to Alice.

Hairy, I'm disappointed, only murder capital of Oz. A few years ago some pommy rag reckoned that Palm Island off Townsville, which was an indigenous mission, was the murder capital of the WORLD, how they knew I will never know. Nothing much has changed over there so I would have been surprised to be upstaged by Alice. It sounds by the ABC report that there is not much difference between Alice and Townsville for that matter. The problem, as per normal is the grog. They play up over there - they ban alcohol so they all hop on a plan and come over to here ($50) get on the grog and run amok over here. I would assume that it would be the same in nearly every city in Australia where young people of all races have 'nothing to do'. The older you get the more you have to stay indoors after dark because you cannot defend yourself as well as you could and they are always in groups. Oh, and by the way, we do have a reputation in Townsville as being red necks, so would have been very disappointed if we had lost the title. LMAO.

Cheers

Rossco,

I am up your way for work a few times a year and I feel that Townsville has changed for the better since they upgraded the strand. It seems to me that many more "families" are spending family time down the strand on a Sunday as opposed to the good ol days of Townsville's famous Sunday Sessions. The parks over the south side toward Railway Estate seem to have been cleaned up quite a bit also. I know Flinders St E can still be a challenge for a single white male at 3am on a Saturday LOL!!

This is an outsiders view and may not be entirely correct but that is what it seems like. Correct me if I am wrong?

Regards, Trevor.

Is that the club that meets at Thuringowa sound shell and has EO member David & Justine Olsen as club members?

Must have been there the same time, about easter, as there were three murders mentioned on the local news in Alice. Although I supose it could have been any other week.

I was also talking to a loacal mechanic who was a former South African cop who used to carry around a rap sheet for about 60 murders per month, that would take some beating

We don't have a problem with crime down here in the Village, unless:

Your a little old lady
Look sideways at anyone
Talk back to a ticket inspector
Have the audasity to drive on the roads
Venture out after dark

Scrubby town must be a terrible place to live.

and you dont need to venture out to find trouble, they jump your fence and let themselves in!

Typical of Today Tonight and that ilk. They can't get anything right. Darwin is the capital of NT. Alice Springs is not the capital.

Alice does have a few murders though.

Yeh mate, problem is though, murders arent that big compared to the assults and breakins etc.... Most of us have given up reading papers and listening to the news...it gets too depressing. All you need to to is go to work, see whos missing or ask whos mates or faimilies got bashed or broken in over the weekend.
Weve gradually learnt how to cope, its the poor bloody tourists who are getting raped, hospitalized and leaving with a real bad opinion of the place, thats going to be the end of a lot of buisnesses.
Even worse.... try telling your kids not be racist!

Yes Hairy it was today tonight, they spent 8 days there filming and interviewing day and night.
Its a very unfortunate title to get, for a great spot.
One example was a bloke who opened a new liquor shop and in the first week had a breakin every second day, and one while the film crew were there.
It had cost him over 10 grand so far for glass repairs and had 3 grand of booze stolen.
Not bad effort for a week.
Im sure he isnt alone.
Lets hope it helps to shame the powers to get off their collective asses, and i dont mean the local ones, and get the support there, needed to straighten it out.
You dont want to end up like Wilcania.

Cheers Pesty
