Gas struts for front boot.

Does anyone have their front boot converted to gas struts. We picked up
our 04 Outback Penguin last weekend after going from Eagle OB to Golf
ofroader back to Penguin OB. Anyway pulled up at van park popped and
locked boot wife got stuff out of boot and promptly shut it bending one
stay. After giving her a serve and straightening it within 3 minutes I
did the same thing, bent it some more and sheared one end rivet off.

We had gas struts on our Golf and want them back. I can get the struts
at trade through our work contacts but the calculations for selecting
the correct struts is doing my head in.

Does anyone have the conversion done and are able to supply me with a
part number for the correct strength and length strut. Even the open
and closed measurements would probably help as there are not that many
in each of the Newton scales that they are made in. Boot is about 1500 x 400ish

Contacting the manufacturer should get you the necessary specs.
Otherwise:
Measure distance between mounting points with door closed.
Repeat with door open.
Get a spring-scale (like used to weigh fish) and measure the weight required to hold the door in the 'open' position.
Now take above info to gas-strut place and they'll sort you out.

Go to a caravan place, look for a van with gas struts on a similar sized boot. If you look on the strut there should be a Newton rating of the strut. Measur the length and take the length and newton rating to the local gus strut guy and he will sort it out, he should have some brakets etc too..
