Prado Diffs

DOBBO60

Hi all,

I've just read a comment on one of the post that states the Prado 120 rear diffs are prone to "blowing up".
Is this likely to happen under normal highway driving and sometimes towing a 1500kg boat, or more likely to happen sand driving on somewhere like Fraser or flogging it in 4w4 over rough ground?
Is it going to be covered under warranty if it does happen whilst driving in these conditions?

cheers,

Dobbo60

I've heard of V6 hiluxes blowing rear diffs but I've not heard of any playdoe's doing it. maybe the constant 4wd shares the load enough.
My FIL has a 120 series and to date no dramas (V6 100,000km)

Dobbo ,
I think it should be covered under warranty if it were to happen however I think you would have to be very unlucky to break one, but if it did break make sure you are on a marked track and not 'off road' as it could be a legal technicality.
It's like the old theory of Landcruiser diffs being weak. I have never had a problem with mine and when you see people break them on show like 4wdtv it's no wonder because they are jumping wheels off the ground with lots of speed in the wheel and when it comes down to earth something may give.
If you look after it, it will be fine.
Rob

Hey DOBBO60

IMOA if you drive it like you stole it, somethings got to give.

I firmly believe that most of these problems are driver related.

Cheers Steve.

It is very unlikelly to happen with normal driving... There was a few cases, which were covered under warranty because it was out mechanical specs...

Mine does 85K over all types of Sand/Rought Terrain/Rocky tracks without any
problems...

Toyota diffs are cut differently to Patrols. Never do a reverse recovery in a Prado, you could blow the diff
