Gday all often read posts regarding which tow vehicle is best for what
whilsts ive no interest in starting the great nissan/toyota debate heres my two bobs worth
we just returned from perth trip in the patrol 4.2 intercooled turbo and towing a 17 foot pop top all reasonably loaded and well i reckon its awesome tow vehicle
cruised at 100km @2500 rpm with plenty to spare for overtaking if req
whilst fuel consumption wasnt measured exactly gained around 450km from main tank which some might say is poor but its all about whats important to you i guess
Cheers

2500 rpm ? my 3 Lt used to sit on 2200 at that speed pulling a 1.5 tonne van and return 7 K's to the Lt would have thought a 4.2 would have been quieter,

Dave

You can buy a lot of diesel for a 4.2 ltr for the amount of money replacing a 3 ltr or the fuel pump on a 3 ltr.

I would rather spend a few dollars more at the pump and save thousands in the workshop.

I can only assume that Barney was driving in 4th gear the whole time.....that would explain the high revs and not-too-flash fuel economy.

It is okay to tow in 5th gear if the load is not too heavy and you aren't tackling hills etc.

If it's doing the job Barney that's all you can ask. The 4.2L Nissan is certainly good value for money as a towing bus but as for what is best well just try an F250. For the same fuel consumption you could tow your van at 120 kph & barely notice it's on behind :-)

450klm from main...Hmmm
How's over 600 klms from main tank towing a 23 footer!
I get that all the time from my turbo'd GQ.
I have squeezed 900 kays from both tanks, nearly all towing (total 140 litres)

That seems about right for the GQ. But you have to remember Dave that the GQ is about 0.5 a tonne lighter than the GU to start with.
