Hi Mike,

The last couple of times I was up that way the Moore river appeared to be a perennial river and both times impossible to cross, possibly wetter seasons than normal. I'm pretty sure 4x4s aren't allowed on the north side of the Moore river mouth due to it being a beach for the locals. I know that in winter if you do the Lancelin to Cervantes run you will come across the Hill river which will sometimes involve a crossing and vehicles have come to grief there over the years but mostly due to inexperience. (if you see an old comby with it's roof above the sand it's the father-in-laws!!) You may have done that run already, if not it's pretty straight forward and you find some of those OKA buses pass through there as well but watch them. One encounter I had was with a particular tour operator who didn't have a clue about ettiquette and may as well have been a bulldozer thinking he had right of way regardless of any situation.

Hi Mike,

As Chris said in his reply trips around Moore River include Yanchep to MR or Lancelin to Jurien Bay. Both excellent trips with some great coastal scenery. My rig pic below was taken up that way earlier this year.

Don't think you can cross the Moore River other than at the road bridge. Conditions of the groyne across the mouth varying a lot depending on season, rainfall, ocean conditions etc. River actually opened up to the sea over Easter. Even if you were willing to take the chance crossing here, you aren't allowed to drive on the beach here.

Crossing you refer to is probably the Hill River crossing. There are 3 ways across...1) At the mouth which can be hazardous and has trapped more than a few vehicles over the years, 2) Upstream at the old bridge site. I've seen a pic of a SWB Patrol almost completely submerged here and when walking it ourselves we found a big hole which had water up to my husbands chest. We elected to take the more sedate crossing about 20 metres downstream from here where the river narrows. Can be a bit muddy with a short steep climb but not too difficult. 3) Drive further upstream and cross at the road bridge.
