Looking at a Mitsubishi Canter 4x4

Submitted: Sunday, May 04, 2003 at 19:59

I'm thinking of buying a Mitsubishi Canter 4x4 crew cab to convert into a slide-on style camper.
I have a wife and two dirt magnets and have just returned from a year-long around-Oz trip so I have some definite ideas I want to put into action.
If anyone has had any experience with these vehicles (or similar), your views would be appreciated.
How do they handle? What are they like off-road? On-road? Any camper ideas?
Also, has anyone any experience with kinetic suspension as opposed to more conventional type?
This will be a long-term road rig for all sorts of on and off-road adventures.

Excellent vehicle and like the Tritons unbreakable. We are surveyors and now have a full Mitsubishi fleet since March. We have 4 Canter 4x4 crew cabs. Ride is a bit rough empty, but if you convert to camper the weight should give them a reasonable ride.

Thanks for that.
How do you find them for fuel economy etc? Are they easy driving or do you feel like you've been doing weights after a day's drive.
I'll (hopefully) be using it for long hauls to a destination and then off roading from there. Last thing I want is to be too buggered to enjoy my holiday.
Also, what are they like on the open road (You've still gotta get to these destinations) and what's the overall visibility like from the driver's seat?

We had some Canters in the RFS. They took offroading with LOTS of weight not bad...

I wouldnt say WELL, as they arent long term vehicles anymore, but replaced every few yrs.

Bloke up the road from my old place in Kurnell, had Drilling machinery, not light weight things, but stuff on catipillar tracks, and his thing is around 10yr old, still going like stink, not that his service routine is that good.. $$ is more important than servicing...

By all accounts they are a good vehicle. A bloke I know up in the Alice dropped a V8 into the engine bay and shod the thing with tyres on 20inch rims. It is an awsome machine. Uses it for his prospecting trips. Has beennhad it for about 10years now.Cheers, Willem

Last 4WD & Camping show I went to they had display models already set up with camper units.
I've got one in mind for when I'm due to do the around Oz thing as they look like the ducks nutz to me.
