Give me the TD42 anyday- absolutely bulletproof. And I get about 10l/100klms driving normally, worst I've ever had on road was 16l/100klms towing a 17'van into a strong headwind- at about 95kph.
I have a mate who's after a TD42 GQ/Patrol or Mav. about ten years old as we speak-

Towing in 5th in many gearboxes is a no-no- but NOT in a td42 Patrol. Aside from a minor issue a couple of years ago where the fifth gear splines were incorrectly machined on some gearboxes, the TD42 manual gearbox is just about indestructible including 5th gear.
A cousin of mine is on his 4th Patrol, each turboed from new, each traded in with abot 350-400,000, and each one has been flogged with usually a ton on the back. He's never had a single problem ie: zip,zilch zero. Just oil and filter changes! One of his ex's is now owned by one of his employees and now has over 600,000- still going strong!
He did own one Toyata- blew up the front dif and then the gearbox and said he will never own another!

I heard most of it before I bought My 2003 GU TD 3.0 auto and yes, I still bought one. From what I could find out most of the blow up stories are from the 1st release engines with less oil in their sumps - the new ones seem to have an extra 2l of oil in them.
Yes i'm sure some of them do have problems - but they do seem to get exagerated.
You could make worse comments about the GQ 2.8TD engine but my Brother has a one and loves it - its now 5 years old and after 3 years of faultless service in the Kimberly he would make the same decision again.
Time will tell no doubt - with all the better deisel in australia now it will be interesting to see how the ZD3.0's go from here.
Perhaps Nissan should have held back ZD3.0 and waited for the new diesel like merc/jeep and bmw/RR did.

I towed a ton plus for 10,000 ks up through the middle when the car was new and had no probs, thanks for the confirmation that it can handle it. Michael
