Nope, not as simple. If you do not like to do anything at all to computer, then only limited options remains - use wake-up facility on modem or LAN. It would require however some other device (sender). If I try to do something like that I would carefully open laptop and connect relay in parralel to "on" switch. Plus make some kind of delay device (really simple - numerious kits can be obtain from Jaycar or DickSmith) to operate this relay in such way that it close upon electricity applay and disconnect in say 2-3 sec. I just soldered a pair of wires onto the power button's contacts, and connected them to a 1/8" phono socket on the back of the laptop, then wire a momentary push button switch to a phono plug via some long wires and mount the switch next to my seat.
That way I can just unplug the switch and the laptop is back to normal.

there should be in start, control panel, power options , a little check box for you to leave laptop running, mines called "when lid closed do nothing". The closing of the lid was not quite the question me thinks! But it is important as is screen savers being immobilised.

The remote switch is a great idea. I use a touch screen so that at the end of a run I use the touch screen to hibernate.

Then when power is next switched on, the maps and OZi etc are all back in place ready for another day of action.

when you close the lid it will keep all of your programs running and what you had on the screen last. So if you have a map and other stuff running like music it will run and whne you go to open lid its all there, but you will need to plug in the powersupply. This is easier then pulling apart lappy and voiding warranty and or stuffing it up big time?????

or oput in a small form factor pc that you use a touch screen there are manufactures that do car pc and you can set it up how you like
