Outback Hospital needs your help!

Submitted: Saturday, Aug 11, 2007 at 13:04

Pomgonewalkabout

Bogged deep in a rut, broken down and urgently needs fixing.
Leigh Creek Hospital, situated in the Northern Flinders Ranges of South Australia, is in a bit of a fix.
Staff at the hospital including myself are currently fundraising for vital new equipment including two patient trolleys for the Emergency Dept.
So far the locals in the town have dug deep with over $6000 raised already but there is only so much that we can ask of them and we still have a long way to go.

So how can you help?

Now I have seen many of you up here in town in your 4wd’s calling in for supplies and a coffee before heading off up the track. The outback can be a dangerous place so I'm sure that you know how reassuring it is to have a hospital nearby (Leigh Creek Hospital covers an area of approx 98,000 square miles). As we all know even the best made plans can fall apart when accidents or illness strikes.
Lightforce the manufacturer of 4wd lighting systems have kindly donated two pairs of RMD170 low mount driving lights to help us raise some much needed funds.

One pair is being offered as a prize in a Fathers day raffle and the other set is for sale in the trader section here on ExplorOz
Trader Item Link
The RRP of these lights I am told is $359 so please dig deep it’s for a good cause
Offers of $350 and over would be preferred
Postage and packing Australia wide included
Payment can be made via a money order payable to

Any further questions please reply to this thread or PM me.

Lightforce have also given us ten free stickers so if anyone would like to offer a ridiculous price for one then please feel free!

You could always borrow Qld Health's equipment.....we don't seem to have any Doctors to use them anyway. :-)

Good luck with the fundraising.

Why not appeal to John Howard ? He seems intent on throwing taxpayers money at small selected projects like yours.

Seriously, I hope your appeal goes well. I can't think of too many causes that deserve money more than a bush hospital.

"Onya" Kim & debbie, Sound like it's worth much needed support & whilst we could not make much difference as individuals if we all kicked in a bit it hopefully might help a much needed service. So I'll stick a "watch" on Pomgonwalabout post & see what details come up so that we can perhaps help in some small way. Thanks

Good on you Derek,

No wonder Ross H reckons your a good bloke to deal with. Might just take his words of advise and come and see you for my next electrical purchases.

Pomgonewalkabout, Is Copely taking the slack for patients in your area? My very pregnant wife and I come through there a month ago and were assured Copely Hosp. could deliver our child if worst come to worst. I can't believe with the mine out there that there would be no hospital in the vicinity.

Good luck with the fundraising.

What other work needs to be done??

If it is trade related work I am sure that between the ExplorOz community that we could arrange some form of assistance in the way of free labour etc.

Good evening all,
Thanks for all the replies and the offer of help it's fantastic.

The lady who runs the post office in town, also a part time nurse, is organising the raffle and getting tickets sorted out.

I have to confirm this with her but they were talking of a GPS Navigation system as 1st prize (don't expect a Garmin or Magellan!)
2nd prize Is a pair of Lightforce driving lights (same as in my trader ad)
3rd prize Signed Dick Johnson book.

I repeat, that I have to confirm this for those of you intending to purchase raffle tickets.

Some companies have been great in donating items
Austar, Fox Sports, Rm Williams, Light Force, Dick Johnson. Adelaide Crows and Port Power with a signed team poster each.

My better half is the Director of nursing at the hospital and I am the FSO, that's handyman to you! She can send an official letter to anyone that wants one bearing the hospital letterhead, no problem.

We both gave up our city jobs and headed for the bush in 2005, after deciding that one outback trip per year just wasn't enough!

Derek your offer is fantastic, you may remember me as I have purchased some auto electrical items from you a couple of times to wire up our Defender to our Camper Trailer.

The hospital staff have been holding fund raising events since around February to purchase equipment.

In June the hospital suffered a further setback in that a ceiling collapsed and so as a result of a prohibition order is currently closed.
We are operating temporarily from a health clinic in Copley.
Most of the ceiling in the hospital requires replacing, but fingers crossed it will be repaired as soon as the government or deptartment of health find funding. Then we can all move back in, although the views out at Copley are fantastic, so too is the bakery!

The nursing staff aren't raising funds for the repairs of the ceiling just for equipment.

I think Leigh Creek is in a marginal seat so Mr. Howard come on down!

cheers

"You can take the boy out of England but you can't take England out of the boy! Is this the reason why I own a Defender?
It looks like it is built from a Meccano set with panels, rivots and screws, but that just gives you more incentive to drill a few more holes and bolt a few more items on to it!

It's noisy inside, not very comfortable and they say that your wife really has to love you to let you own one!!"

Sometimes it just takes a few to make all the difference. I like your rig profile.

Meccano was one of my best toys as a child.

Good luck Pommy. Every regional town needs some sort of hospital no matter how small.

They're planning on closing hospitals in towns such as Cleve, Cummins, Tumby Bay etc leaving only Whyalla, Lincoln and Ceduna to service the whole of the Eyre peninsula. Not very helpful at all.

I hope you are able to keep L.C. hospital running to a decent standard in some capacity. People will appreciate it. Can't help you out this time except to say I'm working in hospital in a bush town too. Only difference is BHP pays big money to fly doctors in all the time in my hospital.

I have no problems also supporting in some way donation, buying tickets etc)

I'm just a bit surprised you have to put up with a ceiling that has collapsed what a disgrace. This I would assume would be a HIGH priority not when the government can find the funds.

Maybe a few photo's slipped to the PA and Adelaide media and a few opposition members may see things fast tracked, Good Johnny seems to be in a spending mood before the elections.

I must be misguided the governments are SCREAMING for doctors etc to work in the bush and they expect people to work in very substandard structures.

If I'm wrong please enlighten me.

Mr Walkabout,
Send me a list of the equipment you require as a priority order, to my member mailbox, I will see what the Canberra Hospital is upgrading and see if I can't organise some gear. As we say in the prehospital field we all play on the same team. The federal gov just doesn't know it!!
I hope this will help.
