2 issues here, first the roof rack , let common sense prevail,

Gearbox and Transfer Case are 2 different items, I had the Gearbox on mine done in Mt Isa 20 months ago at a cost of $3200.00, that included a rear engine seal and a new clutch kit, The transfer case was done at Prosser Toyota, Gosnells WA in May this year at $1700.00

re the roof rack:
Common sence says rooftop tent 50kg + 3 "persons" say 75kg each 225kg + 3 crossbars from ROLA (heavy duty aluminium states 3 bars up to ROM whatever that means) say 5kg each 15kg totals 290kg little bit of tossing and turning can increase the stress so the total active load around 350-400kg.

Why the hell do they picture them on a 80 series with two tiny roof crossbars underneath it?

re the gear/transfer box:
overhaul of both with clutch $4900
price of my truck $5000 hmm how do I justify spending money on that suppose I shall stick to secondhand something like $1000.

Going by what you see on Fraser Island I would say the roof capacity is 8 sleeping bags, 4 tents and all the worldly possessions of 8 german, british or dutch backpackers.

Welcome fidlim to the happy world of troopy owners.
There are a lot of well informed people on here, i myself are like you and just starting out a few things that i have come to learn about yours and my model the 89' 2h is that it doesn't like to be turboed but if you already have one one the donk i can only suggest that you monitor your engine temps (i would be looking at an additional monitor to the factory standard).

With roof racks a lot of the early troopys had problems with the A pillar cracking, the roof rack from what i can understand stops the vehicle twisting, toyota have a kit out to strengthen the A pillar.

Put only light stuff on top heavy gear can make you tip over a lot easier.

I have also been wondering about a gear box rebuild and the cost associated with such, i can let you know after 12/9 as my troopy will be having a check on the box.

Cheers

Steve

Member Stephen (F) has the good oil on these two issues as he has a Troopy the same model as yours (which I have seen- very nice)

Mine is a 97 model and the of the last run of the 75 series so I am not going to comment on your situation.

The 'A' pillar design was changed at some point to counter act the cracking that Stephen (F) mentioned

Thanx mate for this tip, something I was looking for, let's hope I can afford it as well. My guess is that it's just the gearbox without transfer hey?
