TL, the station is called Poolamacca Station. You'll find the story about it reproduced on the Nissan web-site - www.nissan.com.au/patrol

Just scroll to the bottom and look for the 4x4 Great Aussie Treks link and scroll down (its the second story on the list) until you find the January 2003 issue, called Hot Tracks and History.Be good, or be quick.

No I haven't, but the reason I knew where to find the story is that I liked the sound of the station as a base camp in the region for a few days. My wife and kids are not too keen on moving on every morning so we tend to base camp for a few days, explore the area on day trips (in about a 150km radius) and then move on 300 kms to another base camp.

Poolamacca sounds the ideal place place from which to enjoy the Broken Hill/Silverton region before the run up to Malparinka/Tibooburra.Be good, or be quick.

You're welcome. Have a great trip and lodge a "trip report" when you return. We may well be doing the same trip in July so I'd be interested to hear your experiences.Be good, or be quick.

Treading Lightly,

There was an article in one of this months 4WD mags on B&B stay at the station that runs the property that the Bore Track is on. I cannot remember if it was in 4X4 Australia or 4WD Monthly.

The facilities sound fantastic and they will give those who stay access to Bore Track even when it is closed to other traffic. I will check over the weekend and let you know which mag it was in.

Just Do It!

Bob,

I thought the Bore Track was closed and only used for emergency use only!!! Is the track open?

If you plan to get to Cameron Corner through the station country - last I heard Quinyambie is effectively closed to allcomers and don't waste your time seeking permission - be prepared to be officially a "trespasser" with the law

Blokes,
Poolamacca has been sold. It is not open in the sense you may have thought, after reading those articles.
How do I know?
I rang to see if I could lead a group from Adelaide, and camp there & use the known/reported 4wd country & tracks. Well, actually I did not ring because the phone number in article is not now a listed number. It is disconnected. I found a different way.
Another community now owns the place.
So we are going to visit Mutawintji instead...which will be fine, and we are looking forward to that.
Pity, Poolammaca looked good..........
btw, it is pronounced pool am i kaRick (S.A.) - ' It is better to travel hopefully than arrive'

Bugger! Thanks for the warning Rick.

BTW, where is Mutawintji and do you know of any other stations that offer "camp & stay" facilities in that area?

Mutawintji is the National Park, 130 km N-E of Broken Hill, reputed to be a very interesting park with lotsa rock paintings, gorges etc.
You can camp there for a fee.
I am not aware of any properties that provide camp & stay.Cheers

Thanks. I found it on the map. Apparently you can also exit the park heading north-west, rather than backtracking to Silverton. I found a story on an alternat route to TB via the park. My problem is carrying enough fuel. I only manage a 400 km range.Life just ain't that serious.

If you are heading for Tibooburra camp there for a few days and do a trip into the Warratta / Bendigo gold fields between Miparinka and Tibooburra. The trip takes you past old stone huts, the Gumval Battery and many mine shafts. Ask the National Parks staff at Tibooburra about access and a mud map of the area.
The area is near Mt Poole and Depot Glen.Cheers, Beddo
