I have used the ram head one and its amazing how much dirt they catch by the end of the day.
We only used ours whilst travelling in convoy on gravel roads.
It certainly stops the dust getting to the vehicles air cleaner.

Tried the ram over one on my recent 10000km + trip through western and northern QLD. As noted previously they certainly trap some gunk....especially insects, dust and other larger particulate matter. Only problem is that they are an oiled filter and from my viewpoint a bit of a pain to clean and reoil.

I have heard of the insert ones being sucked into the snorkel, can imagine that would be fun to remove while out & about.

Good experience with the ram head sock type. No noticeable erosion of performance nor economy. Don't run them on the highway, just dirt roads. Great in convoys.

Cleaning may be a nuisance, but on a trip to the cape, the difference in my mate's air filter was very noticeable as he did not have a sock. Rather spend 10 minutes cleaning the sock and re-oiling it than cleaning the air filter.

we clean ours with turps in a small spray bottle. Simply squirt the turps through the filter till its clean and then pour some light grade oil in the middle of the filter and work it around in your hands till the oil is uniform.
To much oil and it runs down the snorkell and then traps the dust.
