Theres a goodbit of OZ software called Oziexplorer. Have a look at http://www.oziexplorer.com/.

Im not aware of specific Outback maps on CD, but have a look Auxlig
http://www.auslig.gov.au/
And Hema maps
http://www.hemamaps.com.au/.

If theres some contradiction about where you are it will be due to different Datum Systems. Check your Documentation and the map title block.

The previous answer was correct and the Auslig maps are on CD. You MUST MUST MUST set the datums on the GPS and in Oziexplorer to suit the maps you are using, normally Australian Geodetic 1966 rather than WGS84 which is the normal default. You will also be able to use moving map which will always show you where you are. Have a good trip.

Theres also Fugowi for mapping software. Much as we use computers for work and advocate trip planning using resources such as ExplorOz, we actually prefer the practicality of paper maps when on the road - for a quick reference it is much easier to fold out a map than to pull the laptop out of its bag, wait for it to start up and load your program only to find the battery is low! Of course, using digital mapping is fun but isnt the whole point of going on outback adventures to get away from your the tools of a modern existence? Basically, you still need the paper maps even if just as a back up. Also, there are still very few CD maps with sufficient detail for the lesser known 4WD tracks.
