Will water get in a roof bag that is not full?

Evening all,
have decided to get a roof bag, but the lovely wife brought up an interesting point, if say you set up camp and took 75% of the stuff out of your roof bag and then set off for a day trip and the heavens open up, would the 25% of the stuff left in your roof bag get wet because it was not packed properly and not full? As we understand it they are water proof when full.

I would think that the biggest problem here is water pooling in low spots. This is going to happen whether you are in camp or out driving around. So the advice would be to always try to position stuff in the bag or tie it down in such a way that the water can't pool anywhere and soak it's way through.

Not as wet as the 75% that got washed away from your campsite while you were daytripping. I have a rooftop bag from Candy Canvas made from truckies tarp. It is waterproof whether it is full or empty or anything in between as long as the flap is pulled sown over the zip. I haven't tried submersing it, but being on the roof. maybe I'd rather not!! LOL.

I used to have one many years ago, made of PVC, and this was a constant problem.
The cause being that the walls were not vertical and the flap used to blow up and expose the zip and let water in.
I would only buy one now if it had a large flap with velcro to hold the flap over the zip.

I have a "Michelle's Sacs" and it has velcro all the way around so the flaps stay down, as long as it is tight and no water can pool on it then it will be fine, you may have to move things around so you can get the buckles tight. They are really easy to take off, so I allways just do that.

They will all leak a little, particularly if you are driving in heavy rain, generally a small amount will get forced past the flap & zip, but if it's a good bag it will be very little.

I have a michelle large roof sac 3 years old, I have just finished 9 years on the road in my caravan so it was on my roof full time & yes it leaked water it also got holes in it in the first 12 months caused by the sac rubbing on the straps,yes I had the straps tight.I saw Michelle at a 4W/Drive show & she told me she wasnt reasponsable for wear & tear I told her it was a design fault but she didnt want to know, very dissapointing wouldnt even repair it. She has since changed the material she makes the sacs out of, I rest my case.I have had 3 bags over the years a bushranger was useless, one I had made, ok for 3 years very expensive & leaked a little in heavy rain after 18 months. The hard base & anti flap straps on michelles sacs are great & if the new material is good they will probably be ok but I found the service very poor.
Whichever sac you decide on only keep things in it that it doesnt matter if it gets wet or dusty thats the best advise I can give based on experience.I am new on this site & hope I have helped a little. Looks like lots of great info on site.Just found out about faulty voyager brake unit & am now getting it replaced for free thanks to this site.
