Cargo Barrier Help - GU Patrol

Submitted: Wednesday, Oct 03, 2007 at 20:21

RFLundgren (WA)

I have just picked up a Milford Cargo Barrier which is labeled GU patrol. I have a GU III ST and no matter how I look at this thing I am unable to make it fit.

I guess my question is, is there a difference between the Cargo Barriers for a GU ST and a GU DX or am I just plain stupid. (I have just checked the Milford site and there doesnt appear to be any difference) I am sure hoping it is the second option, although if indeed it is the incorrect type for the ST I am able to return it so all is not lost, except that I dont have a Cargo Barrier for the time being.

Any assistance much appreciated. Even if someone has a set of instructions they could possibly scan and email would be awesome, or even just some pointers as to why I cant make it fit.

I fitted a Milford in my GU3 - while ago now though.

Be helpful if you described the problem you are having in a bit more detail.

Only thing I can think of is that there are 2 mounting positions - one behind front seats and one behind middle row seats. The arms going to fixing point for each position are of a different length. Therefore, one set of arms are not used. Are you trying to use the wrong one's??

Good luck JD

The barrier has 2 points at the top which I assume bolt into the rear hand hold points? At the base it has 2 longer brackets which I assume somehow bolt into the rear seat mounts.

I just cant even seem to get the thing in and into any kind of reasonable position which looks like it will fit. Very frustrating as checking the Milford site this appears to be the correct barrier for this car.

Besides the brackets at the top and bottom of the barrier is there any additional mounting hardware I need to make it happen?

Thanks Trekkie

Been there and from what I can see the barrier I have is the correct one. I only wish they had the install instructions on their site as well.

It all sounds too complex having to drill holes in the truck to make it all fit. On this occasion I think I will take the smart option and find someone to install this professionally. Thanks for all the responses.

ITs really simple dude.
But only after i looked at mine for about 2 hours.
There needs to be treaded holes in the roof, inside the rear grab handle though.
and the bottom ones dont mount to seat mounts, but they go in the floor and the long ones 90 degress from the barrier pointing at the rear doors. floor mounts should already be there.
i can send you a pik if you like.

Hi
A word of warning with regards to installing second hand cargo barriers; when I contacted Milford to enquire about installing a second hand barrier that I considered purchasing, they told me that they would not do it, citing the fact that their barriers are not warrantied if installed into a second vehicle. I contacted another installer, who said they would install a second hand barrier, but, legally, they would have to remove the placard, so the safety rating went to zero. Also, the quote I received for installation ($230), made it more viable for me to purchase a new barrier and get Milford to install it. I don't know what the insurance ramifications would be in the case of an accident, if your company found out that you had a used barrier in your vehicle. Maybe someone could shed some light on this?

It was there when I bought it. Honest.

But seriously.. what's the difference between fitting a used barrier into your car, and buying a car that already has one fitted. Technically they're all 'used' as soon as they are installed.

I'd just use new bolts on the new installation.

had same a while ago when i had a second hand barrier installed into a falcon - they said they had to remove the placard (which they gave to me anyway)

recently had a new milford installed into a GQ and the cost for a new one mounted by a recommended milford installer was only $500. cost and hassle of attempting it myself made that a bargain for me (a major 4x4 accessory place quoted over $700 for same)

I actually rang around a few places today in regards to getting it installed professionally. Talk about extortion, prices ranged from about $175 + fitting kit (which itself ranged from $79 up to about $130) to about 250 +fitting kit.

Most places I rang actually thought that I wanted the barrier supplied and fitted and te general price was around the $750 mark.

The barrier is basically new, was taken from a new vehicile so has never been used, just doesnt have the fitting kit with it, but for $165 for the barrier I cant complain too much I guess.

Not a bad price all up, Richard...I finally got mine from Opposite Lock installed for $470; Milford Quoted me $490. The Opposite Lock barrier is not a Milford, but it does the same job; it installs closer to the back seats, so gives an extra 100mm cargo area (compared to the barrier I had in my ST diesel (which was a Milford) before I upgraded to the ST-L). The new barrier sits in the dip behind the rear seats, rather than the floor of the cargo area. By the way, Graham, the roof line in the ST and the ST-L is the same, only no vents are cut in the ST for air conditioning. The cargo barriers for the GU Patrol fit all...

Yeah I guess I cant complain too much really. It looks like one of the 4 x 4 places south of the river will do the install for around $180 complete (I get a bit of a discount from one of the Perth forums). That makes it reasonable value all up I guess.

On a more positive note while discussing accessories, I did pick up a brand new (second) Tracklander full rack today for $500 which is almost $1000 under retail so that was a bargin. I am still trying to find the supposed flaws in the powder coating that makes it a second. Ii guess if you do the research you can get a great deal from time to time.

Hi Bryan,
I'm no guru on the subject, but warranty issues and insurance issues are two different things. Regarding insurance; if the vehicle is insured, even a 2nd hand barrier is going to help prevent the collapse of the car in a roll-over situation? Better than no barrier at all. I guess with all the loopholes insurance companies look for these days, a 2nd hand barrier could be the cause of death, not the semi that hit them lol

I puchase my cargo barrier off ebay for $30. (like new) Then purchased a mounting kit ($80) with the view to doing it myself. Ended up paying my local Milford dealer $100 to install it. No placard removed and no questions even asked. $210 later very happy.

MIlfor or TJM will supply a mounting kit with full instructions for $79
I got one and its not easy but read it fully and u can do it.

In a 100 series if u pull the inner plastic trims off there are little starter holes where the barrier goes. May be the same in Pootrol

The threaded holes in the floor are for child restraints NOT CARGO BARRIERS
The cargo barrier holes have to be drilled in a specific place as shown on the instructions
Do not use the handhold bolts as they are only 6mm bleep metal and the cargo barrier ones are 12mm high tensile

The only trouble you will have is if you have a Patrol with rear seat aircon as the roof is lower and they wont fit (mainly in STS or STL)
My friends V8 Croozer has this and they had to sort of slant it back a bit to get it in. Not really wise but doable

The only diff I know of is between a DX or ST and ST-L or TI. The latter two have rear aircon and the barrier is different (shorter due roof line dips for aircon duct).
