I have an awning/tarp which is very useful. Its considerably bigger than most awnings, but still fits in a neat package on the 4 x 4. It was custom made for me by Bob Burridge of Australia Outback Bush gear, in NSW, and posted to me for a very reasonable price.

Any tent or tarpaulin maker can supply a good heavy weight one. Most of the extendible aluminium or steel poles are suitable.

Going this way will be cheaper than purchasing one of the roll up ones and will be more robust than most. If you want one of the roll up ones the only one I would recommend would be the Aussie Traveller, Coolibah model.

I've had one on the 4wd for some time now, and found it to be very good and sturdy. They also make walls for the awning as well.

Can't remember the owners name, but he's very helpfull.

G'day Rolande. I have a black widow 2m x 2.5m awning. Very sturdy, and with a couple of guy (spelling?) ropes is extremely secure in high winds. We also find the ropes make great clothes lines. On our recent trip we encountered some pretty windy spots, particularly on the west coast, and pegged down, the awning was no problem. I'm sure there are plenty of others around that will also perform well. Just a report on my experience with this product over the last 2 years or so. If you are interested they can be found on the black widow website on the 'new products' page. I also suggest taking a look at the bushranger awning. I haven't seen this one, but it looks identical to mine in the photo on the web site - and cheaper too. Good luck.
