Hi everyone,
I was wanting to know if I need a pure sine wave or modified sine wave inverter to run a relocatable wireless modem from bigpond?

cheers

I would always go pure sine. However why dont you get the 12v - 6v dropper from Dick Smith and run it from 12v?

Hi Peter
does that have the same connector to plug into the modem or does it connect another way.

Excuse my ignorance as I'm an electrical idiot and havent heard of this before.

cheers

Check with the writing on the power adapter, or on the botom / back of the wireless modem.

It will say something like 6, 9 or 12 V then AC or DC.

If it is DC then as Peter suggests you can get a DC to DC converter from say Dick Smith and you set it to the same voltage as your wireless unit says. If it is AC then you must buy a DC to AC inverter and use the original power adapter.

In this case I suggest that you buy a small modified sine wave one from Dick Smith ant try it. These are $40 - $60. If it doesnt work then Dick Smith will take it back withing 14 days even if you open it and change your mind. Then you can get a much more expensive Pure sine wave unit.

If the unit is DC you can still use the inverter but it is not as efficient as the converter and if you can avoid having 240v in your car then you should do so.

If he gets an Inverter it can be run other items as well, I use my 800w for the Bigpond Modem along with 240v Mozzie repellant pads, , a 650w angle grinder and a 550w drill , lap top, Light, charge the phone, camera Batteries,Movie Cam, it will run my PC & Monitor + Modem in the Van if needed.

Hi Doug

I agree with what you are saying but charging phones etc on 240v is a waste. When you consider that even the very best inverters only run at 92% efficiency and more likely 85% you are actually wasting battery power. If on the other hand you have solar and plenty of batteries etc then its totally irrelevant.
I am yet to buy my inverter but plan on doing so very shortly.

So you reackon charging phones on 240v is a waste ,,,WHY, Well if I don't give a #### ^^^^ if it's 92% efficiency, 85% or what ever , it charges the phone when I'm away ....perfectly, actually if I connect my phone to the PC via USB it also gets charged from that source, Seen a bloke the other day , just bought a Solar panel for just over $1000 for 80watts, My thoughts were . your a clown , I would have put that money toward a Jap gennie and got 1000 watts.

I am not criticizing the way you do it. I was merely pointing out an alternative way.
If the other guy was a clown then so must I. I have 4 x 120w solar panels on my bus.
I did look at the generator option but in the end I figured that I couldn't use them legally in national parks and solar is oh so quiet. Once again just stating an alternative.

Tks Doug, that was good stuff and I did a copy and paste into Word to save it for later digesting. Why is it that you can do a C & P of this material but you can't do the same from your bank site statement. Just thought you might have the answer.

Mate I don't suppose you have noticed but I support products same as everyone else does , If someone asks or comments on a GPS then I won't stuff around goin' Umm Errr mmm I think so , maybe , All my comments come from experience from using the items I comment on, Have you seen me thrashing Magellan GPS units ...Nup , never used them so I have no idea about them , Series 2000 Suspension ...Nup, although if it has made in China on it like radio's and Gennies, drills, ...No we won't go there today,
actually just had a look at my Samsung Phone, made in Korea, and the battery in Japan /Korea

If is anything electronic we would recomend that you use a Pure Sine wave for safety, better than destroying something, cheaper in the long run and better if this were to happen 500 clicks from town!

yes, PURE sinewave............ only real choice

anything else is just second best & yes less expensive

As the notion of some being only 85% efficient
Yes, some 'elcheapo' inverters are - but the better quality ones are over 90% efficient

Then there's the question of 90% of what ??

No one complains when they loose 10% of their 12v power getting to their Aux battery system & often they really don't even know it.

For shear efficiency use an inverter "matched" to power the product/s you use.

Eg.. don't use a 800w inverter only to charge a 'low drain' item, yes you WILL loose well over 10%
The larger the capacity of the inverter, the larger the loss, when charging a "low drain" appliance.
(unless you NEED the inverter to power something else and the 'low drain' item is just added to the load or it's 'urgent' that it's charged)
yes bigger may often be better - but is it efficient ?

However, if the Storage battery system is reasonably large and easily recharged (solar) then there is no real problem at all with having a large inverter capacity.
