Hi Truckster

I have been told by a mate to try out the Castrol RX Super Plus engine oil on the 80 Series TD. What's your comment? What others would you recommend? Ta.

Hi Not truxter, but i can comment that this oil is used in my friends 1hdt 91 cruiser, and its the only one that doesnt get used by the motor. All others need to be topped up after a few thousand kms. Oil pressure is better aswell when the motor is hot.

Do u have a 1hz diesel in the 96 or the factory turbo 1hdft? The earlier 1hdt had problems with blowby caused by soft oil rings and the flutes in the tappet cover were a recall to slow oil being burnt. Oil pressure in these motors was not to good at idle either, with my friends producing just 15psi (35 psi at 2000) For a motor that can rev to 4k, thats not enough! (The 1hz makes 60 psi hot- by comparison)

I changed to RX last oil change, and did a trip to bleep ney and back so far, seems good.

Was using Rimula X and would have this time but they didnt have it in 20 ltr drums.

Hi Andrew, In regards oil pressure on 1HZ, I have 97 troopie with 260k's and the oil pressure at idle when warm looked a little low to me (going by the guage). Normally sits fairly low on the guage at idle. I was concerned about it and got it checked by a decent diesel mechanic, he said it was a bit lower than spec's but ok. I have since seen a mates 1hz same year as mine with near 300k's his was the same. Is this fairly common? I use castrol GTD oil and dont have to add oil between changes. My mate used valvoline in his 1hz and it used plenty, seemed ok with the castrol? Cheers, Peter.

I've always been of the opinion that the brand of oil doesn't matter (as long as it a repreable brand) as long as you don't go changing brands constantly. I've stuck to this rule of thumb for the past 20 odd years and it has served me well with excellent mileage out of my vehicles. What I mean by that is when I've sold the cars there was still no sign of the motors burning oil.
Have I been led up the garden path for all these years in that you can change brands without reducing engine longitivity. I thought I'd ask this because I see a lot of people asking about different oils they want to put into their vehicles.

Bloke on Patrol list Nick has used Shell Rimula X from NEW in his 1989 GQ, it has well over 530,000klms on it now, he took the head off few mths ago, thinking it would be due for work, and hour later put it back on changing only gaskets and seals needed for head removal...

I think stick to the oil rating that is in the manual. If it says use CF, use CF even though this is not the latest rating. Later oil ratings in part have evolved to meet environmental criteria and so some of the additives that help to reduce wear (such as phosphorous) have been ruduced because of environmental concerns. Search the net and there are some comparative tests available including I think some links in past posts on this forum.

I spent alot of time trying to research why my nissan manual says top never use CG4 adn all I found out is latest rating specs in not the always the best.

I use Pennzoil, brilliant sh*t. Take prices of all oils and go the most expensive. Not saying for once that Pennzoil is the most expensive but it's up there with em.Love the bush.
