we recently done a lL300 engine swap with an imported motor.
there was a few problems we had but nothing major.
motor was out a front wheel drive car nimbus i think so we had to change a water pipe .engine mounts ect.
motor was fuel injected but just bolted carby and manifold of old engine.
this was where we had a little trouble.
if the motor your mate gets is a fuel injected one change the timing cover over from the old motor and timing belt while your going.reason being fuel injected motor timing mark was in a totally diferent place to his carby one they run a much higher degree of timing.
apart from that everything else went good as gold.
when we got the motor it came with gaskets/engine mounts and a piece to bolt on where you change the qwater pipe to cover a hole from the old water pipe.

Ive seen 2.6 astron motors in these cars. I have just sold a l300 2wd, and have a spare car in the front yard. It has a 2 litre with extracters in the back of it complete (almost) depending on where you are, it might be a cheaper alternative.

The motor in the L300 at the moment is the 1800 I presume, a 2 litre sigma motor will go in easy the 2.6 has a bigger clutch and diferent bolts spacing. So if you can find a 2L sigma with a good motor and rusty body [standard] you will be ok, If you are in Melbourne I can supply, Eric.

believe it or not a friend recently sent me a website showing a 2wd one of these being used as a plumbers van with a 350 Chev in it. It runs something like 11 second quarters with the plumbers roof rack still on it.

In all seriousness, that's amusing but not very sensible, unless of course you have a chev just sitting there.

Mistubishi have a range of import engines which sould fit, from 80 hp single cam jobs right through to Evo Lancer and Galant VR4 ones.

I bought a secondhand engine for a Hyundai Sonata I had once, then was absolutely furious when I found out it would have cost me less to fit a twin cam turbo GSR Lancer engine than a clapped out old 2.4 Single cam lardbucket......

You see, no-one even considered it as a swap, me included. But there are heaps of engines which will go into it, and often the biggest one isn't the fastest or best. Make sure you check out all the Mitsu engines in that age in 1.6-2.6 litre capacities before you decide.

I've seen a couple of 2.6 converts. They were very happy with it, but I never got around to asking how they went about it.

I am currently converting my L300 1800cc to a Astron 2600cc. So far so good If you are interested the sigma GL AUTOMATIC motor fits easily you only need to alter the sump to miss the front diff (my biggest problem so far) and move the radiator forward 1 inch( easy with the way they mount it)
Take the auto stuff off the Astron and fit the fly wheel of the old motor and bolt the gear box straight on. I am a mechasnical moron and i seem to be muddling through
