Rear view mirror on LC100

Submitted: Friday, Feb 01, 2008 at 10:49

Dunco (NSW)

My 2007 LC100 has a convex/concave (whichever one) on the drivers side which allows me to see wide angle trhe same as the near side mirror.

Every LC100 I've seen appears to have the normal straight mirror on the drivers side...anyone else have the same as me ????

Personally, I am used to it now and like it...just curious as to why it is there ?

Yes, I think all vehicles arel similar, part of the Australian Design Rules.

Personally I think it is more dangerous than having a standard mirror on the left hand side.

You may get a wider view, but the distance is all buggered up and vehicles approaching from behind appear to be further away than they really are.

I hate it!!!

Yes me to Sand Man. Bloody trucks even have them now. Try reversing truck with 21foot body in a yard full of sedans with these stupid mirrors. Havent hit any yet, but more good luck. Also when we first got the Paj nearly chopped a blokes nose off on the m4 due to the mirror not showing true distance. By the way love my Jack, swmbo has evened noticed how much smoother the motor is than her Paj. (which wouldnt be hard lol)

My drivers side is flat, left side is "faraway".
Had a little Corolla (or some such) the other day while 100 was in for service and I noticed it had the "faraway" type on both sides. Didn't like it, but I guess you would get used to it. However, with the van on or the back loaded up so you only had the external mirrors, I would definitely want one of them to be flat.

I think they are convex both mirrors these days mainly for women when they are putting their make-up on at the traffic lights, they can get a good right and left profile view in conjunction with the electric movement of the mirrors. This saves them adjusting the rear view mirror so they can still see if the guy in the car behind is checking her out! ;)

With limited rearward visibility and big blind spots on my 79series, I went for convex on both sides, instead of having one of each. Avoids confusion and the "objects are closer than they appear" thing is easy to get used to.

My '05 cruiser had them and I had not long had the cruiser, one night I nearly put a motorcyclist into the medium strip because I thought he was a lot further back ( he was level with rear wheels), so the next day I went to Toyota and ask if I could get the older model flat glass style and was told that I could only the type of mirror applicable to my make and year model, don't worry about it I said in a huff and walked out.
Half way back to where I was parked It dawned on me that earlier 100 series had a flat glass mirror and there was one in the used car lot, so I had a look and sure enough, a flat mirror on an '02 FZJ 105, back into spare parts (same bloke) and said, can I have driver side mirror glass for an 02, paid the $68 ($120 approx for a convex type) and fits straight in.
Only did the drivers side ,Those convex mirrors really do have a place and are real handy, but I hate depending ONLY on them,
OK for passenger side, often wide angles are needed, but for drivers side, actual distance is far more practical IMHO

My 07 model also has it
very dangerous when changing lanes etc.... and probably explains why people in modern cars seem to want to change lanes with little or no room
Would rather have flat mirror
