Magellan Explorist 500 will not work with OziExplorer .

Submitted: Saturday, Feb 02, 2008 at 08:54

Member - Willie , Sydney.

I spent $1000 on a Magellan 500 to connect to my OziExplorer software . I wanted a good quality unit after my last el cheapo off eBay, let me down in the Gibson desert last year .

I could not get it to hook up with Ozi and neither could Richard W , so off I went to GPS OZ and they spent two hours with it before throwing up their hands in disgust .

They rang Magellan who had no answers . If they found a fix they were going to contact me . They have not done so .

So , be warned , and check if the Magellan you are about to buy, is compatible with Ozi .

Willie .

I must add to the above post .

My computer is a Fujitsu Lifebook Tablet and runs Windows for Tablet.

Maybe that different operating system is causing the problems . Does anyone know of a 500 working with OziExplorer on a normal laptop ?

I know that Barnesy has not been able to make his work , but that is still work inprogress , so I am not sure what the result will be .

Sorry to hear of your dillema, but I keep asking myself why people buy goods like this on Ebay , with no warranty, or service backup,
It would have been much cheaper to have gone to GPS-Oz or Johnny Appleseed and bought a new Garmin, ...that WILL work.

Mr T ,

I purchased my 500 at GPS OZ and look where it got me .

I had a Magellan FX324MAP before , so I thought I would stick with a brand that had been very reliable . It's very good to use - it's just the Ozi problem that's a bummer .

I got the bluetooth GPS "failure" off eBay because it was small , needed no wires and was cheap - big mistake .

I should have got a Garmin so I could pester you constantly with questions .

I was mainly referring to the El-Cheapo you got that let you down when it was needed most in a desert.
Had you got a Garmin Willie all the questions you would have fired at me would have pestered me mate , I get great enjoyment out of helping people...that is providing they're not a Nerd, and you most certainly do not fit that category.

Hello Willie - Magellan eXplorist + OziExplorer will work fine on any computer (including laptop) running XP or Vista - just a case of installing the right drivers and configuring OziExplorer correctly..maybe some exceptions but it wont be Magellan or OziExplorers fault. Based on the information you have provided and the expertise of the people you have got to help I suspect it is the operating system of the "Tablet" that is the issue.

Buying a Garmin as DT suggested (not sure if he meant a Garmin gps instead of a Magellan to run through OziExplorer or just give everything you have the flick and use one of those Nuvi things) may or may not have worked. Anyway I am lead to believe you are now up and going using a usb mouse gps or similar. Your "warning" probably should be to "tablet" owners advising to be sure all devises that are required to be connected are compatible. Difficult to test so your experience is invaluable.

Hi Greg ,

Glad to see you made it home safe .

Do you think I should be approaching Ozi to try and get some sort of patch , or Magellan OR will they think it unimportant , and ignore my problem ?

It is working great now with the mouse type one and I bought a spare , just in case . But I would still like to be able to use the 500 as a back up if needed .

I have Ozi on my normal laptop , so I will see if it works on that tomorrow . I will email you if I have a negative result .

One thing about having a problem like that , it means you really wade in and get to know how it works , instead of being scared to touch it .

Cheers ,

Willie .

Hello Willie - eXplorists are on the verge of becoming a superseded product (some models are already discontinued) so doubt if you will get much joy out of Magellan. They didnt even bother making a driver for Vista that allowed for NMEA communications (used for moving map) - someone else had to do it. No harm in asking though, maybe they know something about the tablet operating system/issues (assuming that is actual problem). No harm in asking the Ozi boys either but I dont think it is an issue with Oziexplorer - it will work if it can get the data in right format - its simply not getting delivered.

Good luck

Sorry to hear of your troubles Sir Willie

I have a Magellan Map 330, now 6 years of age and working well. And it cost close on $800 in 2002!

I now have problem with a TomTom. Parts of the preloaded software doesn't work all that well.

So I contacted TomTom via their website. They came back to me within 24 hours to say "Sorry, we can't identify your problem but have sent your request to our technical department".

Obviously the Technical Department has no idea as well as that was a week ago....LOL

PS Are you running Vista or XP on your laptop?

I to have had a Magellan 330 for a few years and it hasnt missed a beat.
It acts as the aerial for my laptop when in the car, operates perfectly with Ozi and when I want to get out and walk I just detach it from the cradle and off I go.......perfect.

What more could you want?

I would have hooked up my Magellan FX324MAP Colour to it , but I wanted to have a new GPS that was more compatible with Google Earth and Ozi .

With the 324 , I have to export the my waypoints into Babel and then into the other software and it is a pain in the butt . And then to transfer the other way is a similar pain .

I am to much of a computer cretin to do all this yet , but my son has promised to help me soon !

Keith ,

I run a $99 mouse type GPS on the Fujitsu with Ozi , no problems . I bought a spare mouse GPS in case of another failure .

I have no idea what you are talking about with your statement "why would you spend $500 on a secondhand unit"

I have not paid $500 for a GPS , it was $1000 and it was new , not second hand .
