Hi Alan
That’s what frustrates me about these people. They have a childish view of firearms in that they believe if we were to remove all legally owned firearms society would suddenly become a “better place”. In psychological terms it’s transference of social responsibility onto an inanimate object and is, clearly, irrational.
Legal firearm owners in Oz are very rarely responsible for criminal activity with their guns, the problem occurs with people who obtain illegal firearms and that would not be changed by removing guns from responsible owners. One cannot imagine a 6’2”, tattooed “bikie” saying “I’d better not take the sawn off shotgun on this job because I don’t have a licence” :)
We need to understand it is not guns or knives or baseball bats or iron bars or C4 explosive or petrol bombs which are the issue… it’s people! And it is impossible to legislate in a manner which prevents bad people doing bad things – making explosives illegal doesn’t stop people making bombs, does it?
