Need quick fix for cracked gearbox

Just noticed today the Troopy had an oil leak,on closer inspection it seems there is a small crack right below gearbox drain plug. It doesn't look like it has been hit,so the other two options are metal fatigue or possibly the drain plug has at some stage been over tightened.
As the former would implicate me I will go with metal fatigue.
What I would like to know if any one has any experience with the wide variety of products available, Epoxys,Liquid steel etc, and what products work?
I carry a couple of Loctite products on trips for similar circumstances but are yet to use them.

The drain plug has a slightly tapered thread and overtightening them cracks them open. Had it happen to my 80 series. Took it back to the butchers that did it and made them pay for it - apprentice admitted tightening it with rattle gun. Gearbox had to be removed, cleaned thoroughly and then welded. Repair lasted
well all vehicle life until I sold it. $1500 mistake by apprentice. Apparently metal
putty's etc don't take to the oily cast material of the box housing that
well.

For a short term fix you could try Devcon Aluminium
Putty F. It's a high strength aluminium epoxy but it won't like the oil that will now be impregnated in the ally and no amount of cleaning will effect a long term fix. Welding is best solution.

There is no quick FIX. Devcon and other products will only be temporary and will cost you more in the long run.
When you do get around to getting it welded they will charge you more because they will have clean the devcon or whaterver out.
Thats if you dont cease your gearbox when you loose all your oil because the quick fix lets go....

What I wanted to hear was that it couldn't possibly be my fault, and Clag will be certainly be okay for the life of the car.

Go to www.belzona.com look for 1221 super e metal. Toolies use this stuff at work, pretty awesome gear. Some USA site said to clean area with brakekleen first to make sure very clean. Could be worth a try.
