You have got to have rocks in your head if you are considering buying a new Nissan or second hand one under warranty. Look for a vehicle which has good service and backup. Unfortunately Nissan is not that company. Bitter you say? Nope I just believe when you have a problem with your vehicle you admit it and fix the problem, it's that simple.

I have a crack in my right rear barn door. I took photos and sent them off to Mr Nissan to put a warranty claim in. They said it was wear and tear and that it would not be covered. I wrote back and said it was a manufacturing defect and they said it wasn't.

Wear and tear is the gradual degredation of something. This is a failure. This is on a vehicle that is not quite 4 yrs old and has only done 65,000kms! Being a country vehicle, most of those km's are on the Hume hwy.

My Door Crack

Incidently, a mate also has the same crack on the door of his Patrol! Funny that - So it's not so uncommon I'm starting to find.
Seems to be a simialr theme to 'no our 3.0l engines don't blow up, never seen that before....' deny everything.

I have had 2 Holdens under warranty and had things go wrong and they were repaired no questions asked, quickly and promptly. Nissan have to inspect the problem, send off a claim to head office, you then have to go back to the dealer again to then get the problem rectified. Two trips to the dealer, what a joke.

When my gearbox started failing at 12,000 km's it took over 3 months and I was without the vehicle for 5 weeks in total while they tried to fix the problem. I finally started jumping up and down and demanded a new gearbox and finally that is what happened. But you shouldn't need to go to that extent.

With Nissan it seems that it doesn't matter what the warranty claim is, be it a blown 3.0l, rear door crack or cheaper items like the drivers seat belt not retracting (bet you never seen that before ;-)), they drag you through the wringer.

Even with the gearbox fiasco, when Nissan had the vehicle for 2 weeks and the problem still existed Head Office wanted me to drive back to the dealer so the mechanic could see for himself that the same problem existed. 3 hours round trip!!! What a waste of time. I can't figure these guys out.

So If you buy a new vehicle you should get what you paid for and that is a vehicle which is backed up if there is a problem by the warranty that YOU pay for when you buy the vehicle. That's why you buy a new vehicle!!!
If you want this then DON'T BUY A NISSAN.

What, did I forget to tell you that I also bought a 3year 150,000km Extended Warranty.......WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!! AAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH

Leroy ......who not only buys new vehicles but also buys them for the backup service.....

HI there Leroy,

I know this may sound a bit lame but is there some kind of Ombudsman that you can make contact with? I can appreciate how frustrated and furious you must be as there is nothing worse than a company that is quick to take your money and never give any kind of backup.

What a coincidence that it cracks just where the reinforcement panel ends - hope an engineer pops up here and can suggest the cause (flexing of the frame, past that point ?). If that isn't a design flaw, what is ? Would it be the weight of the spare moving the main door 'out' and the upper door frame can't go with it ?
Anyway, if you press on, they will fix it - they might just think you haven't pressed enough yet !

Leroy, my sympathies mate. Arent we lucky to have this forum to vent our spleens on such issues. You obviously have experience in dealing with such matters so keep on being noisy. I have told a couple of mobs that I have a relative very high up in the office
of the Ombudsman, & action was immediate. Crap of course,
but we dont have to wear this nonsense. Good luck with it.

You could also write to "not good enough" and let lots more people know your problems. They have a mail out every month or so and everyone hears about various problems.

Hi Leroy,

I know EXACTLY where you are coming from. With my flywheel failing at 105,000 kms Nissan basically told me to F..O..

Anyway, I was so bleep off that I have made a claim via Consumer Affairs and have received paperwork back that they are investigating it and have already made first conact with Nissan.

While not expecting to get anywhere (CA are pretty much a toothless tiger) I make a point of telling everyone I know!!! And given I am about to buy not one but 2 new vehicles guess which brand is not on my list!!!

Cheers

I will steer all that will listen away from any potential Nissan new vehicle purchase or even one where the vehicle is still under new car warranty. You get so much better service from other manufacturers.

OT my BIL got his new clutch kit including flywheel last Friday. $2200 and similar mileage to you!

Tell me what you end up buying Captain ! I had a look at the new 200 series & the salesman agreed they had less room in the front & minimal headroom against the 100 series. When I asked the Salesman for a tape measure to measure the room in the 60 series he said he didn't have one. I did a rough job by hand (not hand job) & told him I had more room in the front & back in a 25 year old vehicle. He then shot through like a Bondi Tram. "OH! what a feeling" 60 series that is. So much for a $69,000 vehicle. Even the Toyota used car salesman next door said he had a customer get into a 200 series & the blokes crewcut was giving the roof a workout & he ended up buying a 2nd hand 100 series Sahara T/D.

Hi Shane,

Cannot justify the expense of a 200 for a vehicle where all compromises are on-road biased. The 200 is great for towing a big van around Aus, but not what I am after.

The Prado is technically the best for what I want when everything is factored in, but it just does not excite me - a new washing machine is great, but who cares!

Now the Hummer... hmm... The V8 arrives in a few months and now that I like!!!. A LOT of compromises but I reckon I would get a smile every time I hopped in - that must be worth something.

Would like the new V6 Nissan diesel with 550Nm of torque, but that means buying from Nissan Australia and given what I think of Nissan now....

Anyway, that is my shortlist and hope to get something within a few months now.

Cheers

Captain,

Funny you mention the Hummer, in retrospect I have been thinking of going back to one vehicle for awhile now & although not a real fan of it with the present motor, claustiphobic interior & not so perfect ride on bitumin it deserves respect offroad. I feel the present lineup of 4'bys are way overpriced & have noticed all Cruisers have gone up in price since the 200's release. I have a nice 8/2007 Commodore SS with 2,600k's for your second car in my garage, so just give me a ring when you get around to it.(only joking !). I really haven't had a good down to earth look at the Hummer but price wise it would be twice as capable offroad than any Cruiser with diff locks & kinetic suspension. All they have to do is get that towing weight up a bit. Yeh! your right they do have some on road presence, but then again some people hate them, but no two people are the same are they.
Cheers.

Cheers.

My sypathies are extended to you in regards to Nissan customer service. Have been through similar experiences and have the same angst towards the Nissan product and company.
When I bought the Patrol a few people said I was mad but I took the punt and it didn't pay off.
I admit I was wrong and made a mistake.
I wish Nissan would be honest with themselves and do a similar assessment.

In the mean time, keep spreading the word!!

Leroy,
I had EXACTLY the same crack, its very common, mine was repaired under warranty. They had the car for a few days whilst at the panel beater. he instered a strengthening plate at the same time. Vehicle was still under warranty though.
The only concern the dealer (or head office) was regarding larger tyres. More weight on wheel carrier.

Ive had 5 patrols so far and dealer has been good up till now. Becoming more useless as staff change over but I reckon the level of service you get from Nissan depends on the dealer. If they fight for you, things just happen if not you end up in this contest with Nissan head office.

Regarding the larger tyres, if you compare the weight of the alloy and steel rims I think one offsets the other. ie using an alloy with larger tyre is probably lighter than the steel with even the stock tyre.

There was a good service manager where I have been getting my vehicle serviced but the cirrent one is weak as bleep . So much for dealer loyalty and getting my car service there virtually from new. I get the impression that the service managers feel so intimidated by head office they have to fob the customer off and let them fend for themselves instead of getting in there and batting for them. I feel this should of been dealt with at the dealer level.

Give me a call (mm first) if you need to discuss my case and experience with exactly the same problem. Same happened with our 2002 GU when about 3 years old. I left the car at FTG Nissan to be fixed and the best they could get form Nissan Customer Service!!!! was an offer to pay 50% for good will. I can give you a few names at Nissan to talk to. FTG were pretty cross at this response and paid the other 50%. What we have experienced is absolutely hopeless customer service from Nissan. This experience was then repeated when my right rear wheel came off on the freeway.Check archives for more on both of these. Nissan have not woken up to the amount of damage they have done to their name. And more importantly to owners who have been pretty loyal to their brand.

Having said this it is only about $350 to get fixed at a good panel shop. It's the principle though - they should honour their warranty. Take it through VCAT and gather other examples form here to back your case.

On the wheels I think they should recall and replace all alloys on 2002-2005 Patrols.

Cheers

Peter

Michael,

When we lost the right hand rear wheel on the 2002 GU I collected info on many cases and as I recall they were all with the 16" alloys that started with the 2002 GU I think.

Have a look back in the archive.

The posts here are 38394, 35665, 35596, 34261 and 51665

Despite some fairly concerted efforts with Nissan I still have not had an explanation nor an assurance that they are investigating why it happens.

As I have said repeatedly, use a torque wrench on Nissan wheels - regularly!

Why don't you contact one of the current affair programs you have couple of issues here, a potential metal fault which seems to have happened before and an extended warranty that seems to be a waste of money.

Big companies don't like adverse media attention and the potential impact it can have on sales!!

Are the passenger door hinges welded to the pillars like they were on the GQ or bolted on like they should be?
On GQ's it was well known problem that the tops of the doors were sucked out by the slipstream creating windnoise. My cousin used to bend them back in every 5k. After the A pillar cracks around the drivers door hinge had been welded three times in the 1st 20k he asked his employer for a different vehicle.

Leroy,
Maybe I was just lucky, after reading this thread I went and checked my 2000 3.0 GU back door fearful of what I might find.Well out of warranty so the last thing I want find is a crack in the rear door. Checked and everything is good, I haven't got the spare on the door any more I've fitted a dual wheel carrier maybe this has saved my door, the dual wheel carrier has been on for a couple of years now. I'm running steels with standard rubber.
Sorry to hear about your woes, never good to hear about things like this. I hope your claim is successful without inflicting to much pain on your wallet. Good luck.

Amazing isn't it the different experiences we have with the same make of vehicle.
My '98 DX Patrol at 336,000 kms doesn't have this crack and i am running 285/75/16 on 16x8 Steel ROH's. Has the quality of materials and workmanship just dropped off in later models, i wonder.
This vehicle has served me well over the last 7 or so years I couldn't be happier with it, well it could use a turbo i guess....i bought it to last me 10 years and i reckon it will.

The loss of the 4.2 or an equivalent 6 cylinder diesel is the only thing that will stop me buying a Nissan as my next car. I don't fancy being forced to consider the 3.0l grenade as the power plant.
I don't care what the figures say, a 4 cylinder is not meant to push this brick-shaped object around on highways or engine brake 3 tonnes down steep tracks.

Wayne, I have the same problem. My last GU 1999 4.2 td my ex wife still has with 380000 ks, the only thing that failed was the front auto lock hub covers cracked, $1000 total and still with the original clutch. My current 2003 4.2TDI has 225,000ks and has been faultless but needs to be replaced before it gets too many ks on it but Nissan dont have a viable replacement. I asked my Nissan dealer in Sydney whats happening on the Patrol front, he told me the 3.0L is the new benchmark... BENCHMARK!!!! He offered to get me a good one... So there must be a way of picking out a good one,,, clever man HUH?? I asked him if he would buy a 4 cylinder Commodore 3Litre, weighing a ton less than the Patrol, he didnt respond to the question.. The new LC 200 is way overpriced by about $10,000 and i believe the Patrol will just fade away when the sales get low enough to not be worthwhile to import them. Petrol models cant be selling so that leaves just the 4 pot time bomb.. Great work Nissan!! Michael

That is not fair wear and tear - that is simple material failure , even with normal flexing , Mild steel is a very resilient steel. You normally only see cracks like this in steel that is already stressed and weakened.

I wish you luck in chasing this one up - In the mean time perhaps a visit to a local engineering shop to get someone to have a look and give a professional POV as to why it has failed - Get it on paper and then present it to Nissan and Consumer affairs

Mate I sympatise with you....... My Navara has been in and out of the dealer. Most things have been fixed.
The Nav has been at the dealer for almost 2 weeks this time for them to decline to repair 7 cracks in the chassis, a crack in the radiator support and a crack where the upper control arm bolts to the chassis. They have already replaced 2 bullbars due to cracks.
I am getting ready for a fight as the quote from the panel beaters was $6500 +
Good luck
