GPS receiver interfering with mouse pointer

Submitted: Sunday, Mar 02, 2008 at 12:14

Mandrake

I just bought a new laptop - It has Windows Vista running it -
I got all my programmes across and working - Only took 12 hours !!..
However my Polstar GPS receiver is interfering with the mouse pointer ... Vista thinks it is a Trackball !! .. Anyone had a similar problem or know how to make Vista load the correct driver for GPS receiver ? Currently running a Prolific USB-Serial Controller driver
Serpl2.sys ... I can get it to work but it requires a lot of mucking about in Device manager ...
Any help would be good...
Cheers
Steve

Another possible solution (cut from OziExplorer webpage)

A method which should stop it happening is included below. We got this from a newsgroup and have had reports that it does work.

1. Boot the computer with the GPS receiver attached. The cursor will be jumping around and all sorts of unwanted stuff will be happening.
2. Disconnect the GPS. The computer will settle down.
3. Select Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager.
4. Click on the "+" next to Mice and other pointing devices.
5. Click on "Microsoft Serial Ball Point" - This is what Windows 2000/XP thinks that your GPS receiver is.
6. Select "Actions" and then "disable".
7. Click "OK" to close each window
8. Reboot the computer with the GPS attached. All should be well.

The next time you boot the computer, it will tell itself to disable the "Serial Ball Point". If you boot the machine without the GPS attached, it will not even show the disabled device.

Good Luck

Delete Vista and install XP - even Microsoft's top executives complained about the Vista driver problem.

If all the suggestions above don't work - leave GPS off until Pc is fully booted up - then switch GPS on. I have to do this with my Garmin and Windows 2000. If I don't I have an uncontrollable mouse!

Looks like Greg and OziExplorer win the prize ...

I had actually tried this but didn't realise I had to boot up again with the receiver attached - I had been doing it after boot...
So all is good in GPS land --- even got UBD to run !!

Now all I need is some time off work to test the little beggar out ..

Cheers to all and happy GPSing !!!

Well everyone the people I bought the GPS receiver off also came to the party with a small addition to the registry which also takes away the hyper-active mouse pointer ...

If anyone needs a copy send me an email and I'll gladly attach a copy for you ..
