Trying to buy shellite / solvent 14

Hi Chaps.

I have been trying to get Shellite in 20ls in Adelaide.

Tried Diggers, cant get it thu them, special order thru bunnings, altho on a search I saw that chips59 was able to get it from them.

Tried BP and shell, both of which forwarded me on to chemical companies who only supply from Melbourne, or are wanting 7/ltr for the stuff.

Anyone out there can help me with some shellite in 20lts below $4/ltr please.

cheers

Last time I bought 20litres Shellite was 15 years ago from Murries servo on Henley Bch rd - had a battle to get it then. That servo hasn't had it since.

I get Shellite or Coleman Fuel from Snowys or Rays. Normal price for 4l shellite is $16.99 and about $14.99 for 4l Coleman. Buy it during the 20% off sales and it works out pretty cheap.

I know curiosity the cat, but I am curious, what do you use shellite for in those sorts of quantities?
I know what it is, used to use it years ago in pressure tilly lamps & I think my poor old mum used to use it in her Iron in the early fifties. I recently I asked our local Jayco distributor how they managed to get the second hand vans in their yard looking so good & was told they wash first with truck wash, then dampen a cloth with shellite & rub over the surface. Did it with ours & was impressed with the result.

Thanks Krakka.

will contact them tomorrow and grab some if its around the 50 mark.

I use it in lanterns/ stoves when we go away camping, Used at least 20lts last year, and also use it as a general solvent cleaner instead of petrol as it has less additives in it, and is not as bad.
Suddenly you find yourself low on the stuff and needing more.

Good question tho, what other uses have people got for it.

Trains/ who couldnt re register as Trains as my old email addy dosent work

Just to add, ive restored a few lanterns, and stoves, and an iron or two, and usually give them back to their owners with a full tank.
That gets you thru the stuff pretty quick.
All the tilleys ive restored/ and the ones I use, run on kero, not shellite, but ive seen a few indoor lights that run on shellite, and have a pump, simmilar to a bicycle pump to pressureise them.

Local supermarket used to have it for $2/ ltr, it was the rehochem brand, good stuff, burned well, and smelt ok too :).

These lanterns are great for using in the bathroom in winter, as they give a great light, warm the bathroom, and keep mould away ;)

Plus its great soaking in a bath reading a great book, enjoying a good wine, with the lantern hissing away gently in the corner keeping the place warm.

Well Trainslux, I find that Shellite is an all round all purpose cleaner. I douse an old piece of cotton towel or rag with a small amount and wipe the relevant object with it. The rag can be washed and used again. Do not use it on Wettex type sponges, as I think it might dissolve them.

No 1 use = wipe the stove/rangehood/wall tiles and surrounds with it after a greasy cook-up, then just a soapy cloth for sparkling clean. Also wipe the floor in front of stove.

No 2 use = grease/oil stains on clothing before washing.

No 3 use = pour on oil spills in garage after filter changes etc., soak up with newspaper or paper towel, oil and stain gone.

No 4 use = remove labels, stickers, glue off new items, walls or whatever the kids have messed up with the above. Removing old ,double sided tape used to drive me mad until I discovered Shellite.

Shellite is my first line of defense in the house and I wouldn't be without it.

I bought 4 x 1 litre bottles for $2.75 each in a supermarket recently.

Hi trains,
I have an older Coleman stove (American model) which can run on either Shellite (white petroleum in American parlance) or Premium unleaded. Apparently, running on unleaded can cause a bit more carbon buildup, but not a huge problem in any case. Premium runs cleaner than standard unleaded.
I run mine on premium unleaded as it's just so much easier to get and so far not had any problems.
Cheers

G'day trainslux,

The last time I purchased this product it was called Shell X55. Regrettably for you on two counts as it was in Melbourne, also it was 2.5 years ago.

For Melbourne folk who are interested, I got it from Oilchem P/L in Miller St Epping and paid $2.29/ltr in 20 litr containers in Aug. 2005, ah those were the days; no doubt considerably more expensive now.

You might follow up with a Shell distributor in Adelaide. Will probably need to be in an industrial area as we used it as a degeaser of parts to be heat treated.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Trains,

The brand name `Shellite` no longer exists, same product now manufactured by OilChem known as X55 Solvent and it is available in 20 litres via BP depots.

I use it in my coleman stove and lantern, but find it very hard to source and no cheaper, often dearer than the coleman fuel which has anti corrosion additives in it.

I recently ran out and went onto unleaeed with no noticeable difference except my lantern def burns brighter.

No petrol smell either.

Will still run coleman fuel occasionally to clean as per instructions, but by running out, I'm now a convert to unleaded, something which I would not have previously considered.
