Trek Books

Sulee

Can anyone recommend a good trekking book to cover Australia. It would have to include: maps, tips and techniques, preparation, fueling stops, track conditions, caravan accessibility and basically everything you need to know before, during and after your trip. We will be towing a caravan but also want information on more remote 4WD only treks too. Thanks.

Not sure about books but if you look just above your post you will a tab TREKS, You will so much more Info in there than any book would.

Agree with Doug. Check out the Treks, Topics and Places tabs above. Far more up-to-date than any book you're likely to buy.

Also, check out the range of books published by Gregory's. I picked up the "4WD Survival Guide" by John Basham and "See Australia's National Parks" by Ron & Viv Moon for $10 each when on special (BigW wanted $25 each !!!!!).

Another worthwhile addition is "Australia's Top 4WD Getaways" by Craig Lewis and Cathy Savage.

Lonely Planet guide books are written in that theme but certainly don't have the detail you are after. No single book is written that covers the whole country with all that information. Buying books on each area is the way to go (ie: Ron Moons Cape York Guide) then getting decent maps for navigation. Additionaly each National park will have their own hand outs with detail in those areas. Auto clubs have plenty of free handouts as is most of the advice on this & other forums.

Thanks. I should have put that in my request. "Info similar to what is in the treks tab". I have looked in the treks which prompted me to ask if there were any books so as to take the information with us. I realise it is a big ask for such an extensive subject.

Yes Michelle, That sounds like a great idea. We are going to take the computer with us but it is nice to have something in the car to research along the way. For me anyway. Obviously, not everyone is going to have a computer in the van but downloads or a printed book I am sure would be very popular.

I purchased a book which covers just about everything you want to know about this subject. Titled "Explore Australia by 4WD" Authors Craig Lewis and Cathy Savage. I find it very informative.

A bit expensive but you may be able to get it on special, as I did, from camping and trekking stores.

It will be interesting to see if there is any feedback on my suggestion as usually someone shoots me down.
