Towbar for Hilux with 2300 long tray

Submitted: Monday, Mar 03, 2008 at 16:52

Does anyone know a reliable towbar company in Sydney or Sth Coast? I have been jerked around by all and sundry re a tow bar for my Hilux. I have a 2300 X 1830 alloy tray which extends past the end of the chassis rails by 550mm. Hayman Reece in Melbourne said that I could not have a tow bar! A fitter down here in Nowra said 'no problem, just add an extension.'

Now I have another problem. 2" lift, so
can anyone help me sort this. I have been researching this for 8 months now and am getting p#@&*^d off by all the conflicting answers from towbar people.
So is my Lux Tray too long for a towbar? Some say yes others say no and others don't know.
I only want to tow my tinny, not a van or camper-trailer.
Cheers

The reason they are wary is that the extension creates a lever effect and adds extra stress to the mount points back under the tray. I'm sure a good engineer (read tow bar manufacturer) could work it all out.

Exactly my point. I need a towbar person to understand this and not just say 'ok we'll fit one'

All tow bars have to be certified by an engineer. If you extend a standard tow bar you will have to get an engineer to certify it again. Best of luck on that score.

Here is a list of signatories that can help you. Engineering Signatories Contact one at least one signatory before you start to modify a towbar.

Have you tried to hitch up the tinny trailer with the existing set up?

Reason I ask is coz I can hook up to mine and my tow ball is about 300mm in under the tray on my Series Landrover.

It will depend on how much trailer tow frame is in front of the bow support and winch , for clearance on the tray.
It may be feasible to add an extension and even create a break-back system on the existing trailer. Any competent welder should be able to fabricate it for you.

see he's dad at silverwater he made the company (fastfit) & has done a lot of strange tow bars to suit many of my converted 4wd over 25years (company has now broken up into several shops due to a divorce) & Sylvester opted for the easy way (dads a hard man but fair)

the other person to see in Nowra is cranky Harold at south coast trailers or Ross Ingram at Bomaderry now works from home after selling the main business
