I used BFG TAs for 20 years and had a great run with them average 70k mileage on numerous vehicles, faults. they are terrible on wet bitumen on the ranges up here and they clog instantly in mud I changed to Cooper ST early this year and have done 30k so far and have been unable to fault them I run them at 34lb on my 80 series far superior to the BFG in the 2 areas mentioned They are also an excellent steer tire We have had a lot of problems with the new KO BFGs up here cracking where the sidewall meets the rim

Coopers are far superior to BFG TAs on wet bitumen with sipes and a water drainage channel thru the centre of the tyre I don't think you will find them too agressive, they are quiet on the road and dont clog in mud like the BFGs do.
It will be interesting to see how the 80,000 klm guarantee stand up tho, I reckon I will be lucky to get 60k. I would rather have tyres that work well and wear than one that last forever and dosen't do the job

The 80,000 klm guarantee for Coopers is conditional on "inspection" ($$$) by the authorised dealer every 10,000 km. Miss one and your guarantee is likely to be declared void if you try to claim.

Peter: why are you thinking of getting a wider tyre ? Heve you really thought this through ? Ihave a cruiser and cannot see why you are considering a wider tyre.. What problems have you found with your Hankook's ??

If you going for a tyre that wide (285), then I you will definately have some clearance issues on the front,
the Prado has very little clearance between the tyre and the suspension (can't fit chains on the front
wheels even with 265's). plus you will get the front tyres rubbing the guards when on full lock. I definately
would not go for 285's, stick to the standard 265's. Also if you have an automatic and you go for the taller
75 tyres, you will lose some low range and engine breaking will not be as good.... i.e if you do steep
decents your low range 1st will feel like it's running away, then you will have to use more brakes. I'm
not sure if this is an issue with manual Prado's, but this is what I found with my auto. Hope this helps

I have just completed a 20k trip around oz Tanami,Kimberly,Gulf,Cape York via OTL in a heavy 100series we have 3kids .We were running BFG A/T`s. We put a rock thru the wall of one on the Tanami ,probably as we were running too high a tyre pressure & had one puncture, that was it. The Tyre dealer in Kunnanurra said that he sells mostly BFG`s and does not recomend Coopers, BFG`s have a 3 ply wall , Coopers 2 ply wall. His reasoning was that simple. However the tread on the BFG`s do get chopped up on rough roads. I havent had a problem with grip in the wet , we didnt get any rain on our trip. I also had BFG`s on my previous Pajero we crossed the Simpson we lost one but that was all, again we were carrying some weight 3 kids & all the gear.

I have a set of BFG AT on an NM Pajero. We do use it for real 4DW and Traveled for 3 weeks from Syd to Cania Gorge via Rainbow Beach, Spicers gap. All this with a 3 month old and mud and beach and road, The BFG went well and have not shown any signs of falling apart. We do a lot of mud work down the back of Gundagai/Tumit/Kosciuszko and they hang on well. Also like the idea of 3 layered side wall

another point to consider is that if you need a replacement tyre in the outback you would be more than likely have trouble finding a 285 tyre. most dealers carry 265's and would have to get one in for you. this would come at an extra cost. i have just bought a set of cooper s/t 265/75/16 for my patrol and they look wide enough the 285's look too wide imho they look silly on a large car like the patrol let alone a prado. unless you are competing in 4wd comps i would save my money.
