Carnarvon Development Road

Submitted: Tuesday, Apr 01, 2008 at 21:46

westskip

Only a bit over four weeks until we leave Perth on our lap around the paddock. We intend spending a fair bit of time in Qld and I'm enquiring regarding the Carnarvon Development Road from Roma to Emerald. Is it suitable for an ordinary 16' Jayco. Also is the Carnarvon Gorge really worth seeing and possibly spending a few days there?

Thanks all

Quite suitable - bitumen. Definitely worth the detour into Carnarvon Gorge. The road in is unsealed, but take it slowly and you should be fine - lots of vanners do it. You will need to check whether camp area within the Nat Park is open for use; the alternative is private camp grounds just outside the entrance (Takarakka) - this has powered sites. Great scenery and some pretty straightforward walks in the nat Park.

I think the actual Park is only available for camping during the holidays so Takarakka it it. You'll get some roadworks north of Injune but nothing to worry about. Rest of the road is good.
Just doing what I'm told. Hehheh

I would call the local council for a current road report AFAIK the road into Canarvon Gorge is still closed and the Canarvon Development road is still damaged from the recent floods.

Maybe Tourboy could give and update ;)

Kev & Darkie,
have to admit that I assumed it would be a while before westskip reached the Carnarvon Gorge area, "lapping" from Perth - and that the worst of the flood damage would be fixed before the tourist season begins in earnest. But, on the other hand, I guess they have a lot to do up that way?
Cheers

Don't forget Mt Moffat which is a national park to the north (backs onto) of Carnarvon Gorge well worth a visit. It is approached from Injune or Mitchell. Has Molong Arch, Kenfiff cave, chimmneys, paintings etc but is a very dry area compared to the lush Carnarvon Gorge area.

Details are on National parks site
